"Justice for Lord'ron: Lament of a Northrend Veteran" is a song I wrote based on "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", a song about the Australia-New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) that fought in the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I. I was particularly inspired by the version of this song sung by Liam Clancy, which I found on YouTube (inspired by a documentary I had seen some years ago on PBS, and have been hooked on the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem ever since).

The narrator of this song is Sir Oren Tanis, a Stormwind general who'd fought in Northrend, and lamented the waste of both the war in Northrend and the war against the Horde while the world burns as a result of the Cataclysm.

Lyrics

"Justice for Lord'ron"

I had just come of age, a shy quiet lad
When the news came from Lord'ron that spring
Some survivors had told me I'd lost my old dad
To Prince Arthas, who'd murdered his King
Then several years on, King Varian says "Sons,
We're going to Northrend so that justice is done,"
So we took up our swords, our magic, our guns
And we all marched away to the North

And we all cried "Justice for Lord'ron!"
From the Wetlands, we all sailed away
Amid all the tears, flag-waving and cheers
We sailed off for Daggercap Bay

Well I remember those dark days, of late
When our blood stained the snow and the water
And how in that hell that they called the Wrathgate
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
The Forsaken were ready, they'd primed themselves well
They rained us with plague from their catapult shells
And in five minutes flat they'd blown us to Hell
Nearly blew us back home to Old Stormwind

But we all cried "Justice for Lord'ron!"
When we came to avenge our slain
In Tirisfal we fought, but it was all for nought
So it started all over again

With the Argent Crusade, to Icecrown we came
Our hearts filled with vengeance and fire
The Ashbringer led us, like a bright beacon flame
As we pushed to the Throne, ever higher
Once the dark blade was broken, and the Lich King was dead
The voice of great Bolvar, to Fordring he said
"Take that crown that you hold, and place it on my head,
And tell no one what happen'd here today"

And we all cried "Justice for Lord'ron!"
As we returned to our base at the bay
The Lich King was gone, the Light's justice done
We'd gained justice for Lord'ron that day

Fifty thousand we lost, in that dark, frozen hell
In a war we thought'd never end
Those who still stood, 'twas their duty to tell
Of the brave fallen heroes of Northrend
And when our ship pulled into Menethil Bay
I thought of Fordragon, as I still do today
And I asked myself, "Why did he have to pay
So that we could come home to Stormwind?"

And we all said "Justice for Lord'ron!"
As we thought we would come home to stay
Then Deathwing returned, and the whole world burned
So once more, we were marching away

So now we fight in our shattered world
Fighting those who'd once been our brothers
The banners of war have again been unfurled
But the war we fight now's with each other
My King and my comrades, who all hate the Horde
Have forsaken the peace that we'd gained in war
They've all forgotten what our friends died for
But a few of us veterans remember

When we all cried "Justice for Lord'ron!"
And all mortals had fought side by side
But the hate's too strong, so they see nothing wrong
With sending more lads off to die
