Background

When the titans came to Azeroth, they fashioned legions of servants with which to sweep away the deviant kingdoms of the Old Gods and make the world ready for re-shaping and order. Their first experiments created prototypes - template beings from which lesser but more numerous lifeforms would be mass-produced. One of these creatures, Galakrond, gave rise to the Dragon Aspects. But the dragons were not the only creatures to be crafted in this fashion.

From their collective might and knowledge the titans make Degaton, the first giant, the first Watcher. He became Prime Designate of the titan's forces, leading them in the war with the Old Gods. All titan forces answered to him, and his strength was unparalleled on the field of combat. He crushed hordes of faceless ones with his stride, tore apart mighty forgotten ones with his bare hands, and laid low even greater horrors unleash by the Old Gods. Even one of the Old Gods, N'Zoth of the Eternal Nightmare, acknowledged the power of Degaton after the giant slew five of his daughters. N'Zoth cast a dire curse into the heart of the giant, causing corruption to be born within him. Degaton fought on regardless until the armies of the Old Gods had been defeated, and the fiends themselves bound by the titans in the darkest corners of the world.

Afterwards, Degaton asked for the titans to purge him of the corruption, even at the cost of his life. But the titans would not slay their mightiest child, and instead locked him away beneath the earth as well. The titans vowed to find the means to restore him, and would awaken him at the dawn of the Third Visitation, when the titans would return to Azeroth to see the fruits of their labors. For millennia, Degaton has slumbered, the corruption of the Old Gods kept at bay within him by his imprisonment. With the rise of the Old Gods power during the Cataclysm, the curse of N'Zoth has grown stronger, and now calls out to the Twilight cult to free Degaton, so that he may be brought fully under the sway of the Old Gods.

Dungeon Journal

Deep beneath the structure that has come to be known as the Vault of Archavon is an ancient titan prison, built to hold one of their mightiest creations. Degaton, the first watcher, the the prime template from which all Azerothian giants were fashion, lies entombed beneath the earth. Corrupted in a forgotten age by the Old Gods, Degaton was too powerful to destroy and too dangerous to be allowed to roam free.

The forces of Twilight have broken the seals within the Vault, and seek to unleash the fallen giant upon the world. If he is freed, ruin and devastation will be all that is left in his wake.
