Amal'thazad is the final boss of the Forge of Souls. He awaits all comers in the heart of the Forge.

Abilities

  • Spell frost frostbolt02.png Frost Bolt  —  Strikes the main target with a blast of magical cold, causing a large amount of frost damage and slowing movement speed for a short time. Cast on random targets. Can be interrupted.
  • Spell frost ice shards.png Frost Bolt Volley  —  Strikes all targets with a moderate amount of frost damage. Instant Cast.
  • Spell frost icestorm.png Blizzard  —  Conjures a raining cloud of ice that moves randomly around the chamber, dealing frost damage to anything that stands within it. Blizzards persist until Amal'thazad is slain.
  • Spell frost frostarmor.png Frozen Bones  —  Raises a horde of Frozen Bone skeletons to attack Amal'thazad's enemies.
  • Spell frost ring of frost.png Freezing Circles  —  Conjures multiple freezing circles at random locations around Amal'thazad's chamber. Circles become active three seconds after they first appear. Anything caught in an active circle is frozen in an ice block, taking periodic frost damage. Those frozen can be freed by destroying the ice block.

Abilities Gained in Heroic Mode

  • Spell frost wizardmark.png Grand Frost Rune Array  —  Frost Runes creep along the floor. Anyone who steps upon a rune becomes frozen in ice, and must be freed by their allies.
  • Spell frost iceshard.png Ice Lance  —  When a target is frozen, Amal'thazad will target them and continually cast Ice Lance, which deals a large amount of frost damage to frozen targets. Cannot be interrupted. If the target is slain, Amal'thazad will be healed for 30% of his total health.

Strategy

Amal'thazad will continually cast Frost Bolt on his main target when he is not doing anything else. Throughout the battle he will summon more and more Blizzards, while periodically casting Frozen Bones to summon a large number of skeleton allies, and Freezing Circles in an attempt to freeze players in ice blocks. Anyone frozen must be freed by their allies before they succumb to the periodic frost damage.

In heroic mode, Amal'thazad will cast Grand Frost Rune Array when engaged, causing blue runes to creep along the ground throughout the entire fight. Stepping on a rune while it is active, or standing on a rune while it becomes active, will cause the player to become frozen in an ice block, as if they were the victim of a Freezing Circles spell. Anyone frozen in ice blocks, either from Freezing Circles or from creeping runes, will be targeted by Amal'thazad and struck repeatedly with Ice Lance, which deals extra frost damage to frozen targets. Amal'thazad will not select another target until either the frozen target is slain, or is freed from the ice block.

Notes

For an idea of how the Grand Rune Frost Array spell operates, recall the Crucible of Carnage final boss, *Mob Emberscar the Devourer. He had that spell that caused fiery red runes to continually light up throughout the entire battle, and they would blast you if you stood on them while they were lit. Like that, only blue, and with ice.
