This template only works for currencies with associated items

Just thought it should be noted that this template only works for currencies that have associated items and item {{tooltip}} in their page. Examples of currencies that don't meet these criteria currently: Arena points and Honor points. Just FYI. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contr) 7:15 PM PST 30 Apr 2008

Gold, silver and copper are notable exclusions as well; in general, it only works for actual items. It's possible to include all of those without changing the associated pages, but they're probably better off with a separate template with a more descriptive name. -- foxlit 11:45, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Preferred over {{cost}}?

Why would this template be preferred over {{cost}}? The result seems to be the same. What am I missing? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 19:18, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

Cost is unmaintainable if we keep adding stuff (like the tier tokens) to it. It's already unwieldy as-is.
One of my tasks, now that I've got a database dump (Special:Statistics), is reducing the use of cost by replacing stuff with costitem where possible. --k_d3 22:55, September 23, 2009 (UTC)
Works for me, I guess. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 22:53, September 24, 2009 (UTC)

"link="

When I run across the use of Costitem in text (for instance "you can buy this item for (costitem) from Vendor Pasquale"), I find myself distressed that I have to run my cursor over the item to tell what the currency item is. This is especially noticable with emblems, as I don't have them memorized by shade.

Note that I have no problem using them in a table, particularly if the currency item has been mentioned previously.

In the same manner that {{item}} has an image parameter, could Costitem be given a 'link' parameter, to make (for instance) "{{costitem|link=|10|Emblem of Triumph}} essentially synonymous with "10 {{item|image=|Emblem of Triumph}}"? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 19:48, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

It would seem that what you're proposing would require existing articles to be modified to take advantage of it; at which point you might as well use {{item}} instead of {{costitem}} in those places. -- foxlit (talk) 23:33, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
I don't see that as a problem. We unstub articles all the time, and make new ones with fair regularity. I'm asking for it in that context. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 21:08, April 13, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not suggesting that the editing effort involved is a problem; rather, the best solution is to leave this template as-is, and use {{item}} in the appropriate places in the articles you're creating/unstubbing. The idea here is to keep templates to doing one thing, rather than having a list of switches that alter their behavior (in retrospect, we should've probably included an icon in every {{item}} link).
[ Like so:
buy this item for {{costitem|1|Protector's Mark of Sanctification}} would become
buy this item for 1 {{item|Protector's Mark of Sanctification|icon=}} rather than
buy this item for {{costitem|1|Protector's Mark of Sanctification|link=}}
