Preservation

While Y'Shaarj's defeat by the Titans is indeed well-documented, I have to say that the actual preservation of the heart is in my opinion still a matter of debate and reasonably interesting speculation.

Firstly, lore items such as Shadow, Storm, and Stone state that Y'Shaarj was destroyed, when we now know that his heart was in fact preserved. This doesn't appear to be known by the Klaxxi, nor is it recorded by the mogu. So, was Y'Shaarj truly, utterly destroyed? If so, why preserve the heart? Presumably the Titans had a good reason for preserving the heart, especially given the risk for extreme badness should it ever be released (as we will shortly witness). For some reason they decided it was worth this risk to preserve it.

The most obvious reason would be if its preservation meant that Y'Shaarj was therefore not entirely destroyed, desirable for the same reasons as the imprisonment of the other Old Gods, to avoid the complete destruction of a being too inextricably interwoven with Azeroth itself. If destroying the heart would lead to even worse effects, it may be understandable that they chose to preserve it instead. If this is the case, however, it suggests that should the heart itself be destroyed, something seriously bad would happen. As pure speculation, if this were the case, and the Siege of Orgrimmar were to involve destroying the heart, this could lead to further events and changes within Azeroth, perhaps leading into the next expansion. Alternatively, if Y'Shaarj truly was killed, why did they preserve the heart? Was it impossible to destroy? Or would its destruction have have dispersed its Old Gods-ness out into Azeroth, leading the Titans to choose instead to confine its effects? -- Taohinton (talk) 20:21, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Of course, the general assumption seems to be that the heart is merely a container of some of the Old God's vibration and power, and not his actual consciousness, or indeed a means through which Y'Shaarj himself might become reborn. The Echo of Y'Shaarj's sinister cries of "I only sleep" are certainly not reassuring in this regard. -- Taohinton (talk) 20:45, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
