Ebon Gargoyle

Summon Gargoyle is an Unholy death knight talent that summons an Ebon Gargoyle. The gargoyle repeatedly attacks the death knight's target with [Gargoyle Strike], a spell that deals Plague damage.

It is an exclusive choice node with [Doomed Bidding].

This spell can be replaced with [Dark Arbiter] by speaking to Lady Alistra in Acherus: The Ebon Hold. Dark Arbiter instead summons a Val'kyr Battlemaiden who uses Val'kyr Strike, dealing Shadow damage. The spell can be changed back by speaking to Alistra again.

Patch changes

  • The War Within Patch 11.0.0 (2024-07-23): Now a choice node with [Doomed Bidding].
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.2.0 (2023-11-07): Damage reduced by 30%.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.1.0 (2023-05-02):
    • Fixed an issue with Gargoyle stutter casting when the cast time of Gargoyle Strike was lower than 1 second.
    • Gargoyle Strike damage reduced by 8%.
  • Dragonflight Hotfix (2023-04-10): Gargoyle Strike cast speed increased to 2.5 sec, up from 2.0 sec and Gargoyle Strike damage increased by 25%.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.0 (2022-10-25): Now a row 8 Unholy talent (was a level 50 Unholy talent).
  • Shadowlands Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now requires level 50 (was 100).
  • Battle for Azeroth Hotfix (2018-08-08): Summon Gargoyle and the [Dark Arbiter] variant will now properly assist in combat and change targets.
  • Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.0.1 (2018-07-17):
    • Now a level 100 Unholy talent (was a level 75 Unholy ability).
    • Duration reduced to 30 seconds (was 40).
    • Now has the same effect as Dark Arbiter: The gargoyle gains additional damage based on Runic Power spent while it's active.
  • Legion Hotfix (2017-02-21): Gargoyle Strike damage increased 50%.
  • Legion Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Duration increased to 40 seconds (was 30).
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.5.3 (2025-12-09):
    • Will no longer stutter its casts and will chain its casts back to back.
    • Can now cast up to 26 Gargoyle Strikes before it is dismissed.
Under the original MoP rules, players only got 25 to 26 Gargoyle Strikes. A bug emerged where being at a certain level of haste would actually decrease the amount of Gargoyle Strikes that went out. In order to fix this, we removed the cast gating on the ability that was present in original MoP, but introduced a hard cap on how many strikes can be cast to keep the upper limit the same.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.2.0 (2013-03-05): No longer costs Runic Power (was 60). Gargoyle now deals Plague damage instead of Nature.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Now a level 74 Unholy specialization ability (was a tier 7 Unholy talent).
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.3.0 (2011-11-29): The gargoyle should exclusively use its ranged attack regardless of range to the target. Additionally, gargoyles should now properly inherit their master's crit and spell penetration stats.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Moved to tier 7 (was tier 11). Icon updated from Ability hunter pet bat.png
  • Wrath of the Lich King Hotfix (2023-02-13): Adjusted so that it now summons at the Death Knight's own location.
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04):
    • The gargoyle now flies lower to the ground, making it susceptible to melee attacks. This ability now has a fixed duration of 30 seconds and a fixed cost of 60 runic power.
    • Corrected the inaccurate tooltip which claimed a Gargoyle could last up to 40 seconds, when in fact 30 seconds has always been the maximum.
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.1.0 (2009-04-14):
    • Swapped places with [Unholy Blight] in the Unholy tree. Summon Gargoyle is the new Unholy 51-point talent (previously 25-point).
    • The Gargoyle will no longer re-attack rogues after they [Vanish], or night elves who use [Shadowmeld]. Monsters will stop trying to chase a Gargoyle after it flies away.
    • The debuff on the target indicating he or she is being pursued by a Gargoyle will no longer display the duration, and will be removed when the buff is removed from the death knight. Max duration in the tooltip changed to 40 seconds.
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.0.8 (2009-01-20): Damage dealt by the Gargoyle reduced by approximately 20% and maximum duration cut to 30 seconds (was up to 1 minute).
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-14): Added.
