Skills tab
The subject of this article was removed in patch 4.0.1 but remains in World of Warcraft: Classic.
|
The Skills tab of the character info window shows a list of skills known by a character, as well as the character's current skill level and skill cap in each. The list is broken up into various sections.
Some skills can be learned from trainers, while others are innately known by characters of certain races or classes.
Skills
Class Skills
Each class innately knows three class skills. They use the same or similar names to the talent trees; for example, a hunter will have Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival in this section.
In pre-expansion Classic, class skills have a skill cap equal to the character's level multiplied by 5. They are always maxed out.
In Burning Crusade Classic, they have no displayed skill level.
Professions
- Main article: Profession
Professions are taught by profession trainers. Up to two can be known at the same time. A profession can be unlearned by clicking on it in the skills tab, then clicking the "Unlearn this profession" button that appears on the right in the lower pane.
- Herbalism
- Mining
- Skinning
- Alchemy
- Blacksmithing
- Enchanting
- Engineering
- Inscription

- Jewelcrafting

- Leatherworking
- Tailoring
Secondary Skills
- Main article: Profession § Secondary professions
Like professions, secondary skills must be learned from trainers. Unlike professions, all three can be learned at the same time.
Weapon Skills
- Main article: Weapon skill
All characters innately know the Defense and Unarmed skills. They'll also know a few other weapon skills based on race and class. Additional weapon skills can be learned from weapon masters.
Each weapon skill's cap is equal to the character's level multiplied by 5.
- Bows
- Crossbows
- Daggers
- Dual Wield
- Defense
- Fist Weapons
- Guns
- Axes
- Maces
- Swords
- Polearms
- Staves
- Thrown
- Two-Handed Axes
- Two-Handed Maces
- Two-Handed Swords
- Unarmed

Armor Proficiencies
All characters innately know the Cloth proficiency. The rest are dependent on class. Some classes gain an armor proficiency at level 40; for example, hunters start with the Cloth and Leather proficiencies and later learn Mail.
Languages
- Main article: Language
Language skills are innately known based on race. They affect which languages a character can speak and understand. All Alliance races know Common, and all Horde races know Orcish. Races besides human and orc will know one additional language.
Notes
In patch 4.0.1, most skills migrated to the Spellbook or Professions tab. Skills listed in the Skills tab that have been removed or changed significantly include:
- Weapon Skills - Each weapon type had an associated skill that needed to be learned, then trained. Included was Unarmed, which has been removed from the game as a weapon skill. Patch 4.0.1 made it so classes now start out with all their weapon skills.
- Defense - Improved your ability to avoid attacks. This mechanic was removed from the game in 4.0.1.
- Lockpicking - A rogue skill that worked like a like a profession in that it needed to be actively trained. In 4.0.1,
[Pick Lock] was changed to scale automatically with your character level. - Pickpocketing - Does not improve with use, was never really a skill even though it was listed for rogues.
- Poisons - Prior to patch 3.0.2, it worked like a profession. It has been removed from the game as a skill, and poisons are instead purchased ready to use.
