The Seal of Argus is an ancient Burning Legion artifact which acts as a compass for locating the planet Argus, the Legion's seat of power.[1] Visually, it is a small disk engraved with greenish-yellow runes and overlaid with the powerful auras of the Legion's rulers: the insane fury of Archimonde, the subtle mind of Kil'jaeden, and the bleak misery of Sargeras.[2][3] The disk always remains unnaturally cold, no matter its surroundings.[3]

History

The seal was originally kept in the nathrezim's great archive on Nathreza and was their most closely kept secret. It was stored in the central pillar at the core of the archive, meaning it was one of the oldest records dating back to near the time of the Legion's creation. For centuries, Illidan Stormrage planned to steal the disk, since he knew that it was the key to his ultimate goal of finding and destroying Argus. One month before the invasion of Outland, he and his Illidari invaded Nathreza, breached the archive, and stole the seal before retreating back to Outland.[2]

Shortly after the beginning of the invasion of Outland, Illidan used the disk in a complex ritual at the Throne of Kil'jaeden to send his soul straight to Argus. A representation of the Seal of Argus he held in his hand drew him toward the palace of Kil'jaeden, where he began casting a spell to strengthen the disk's connection to the planet and allow it to act as the anchor for the portal he planned to open between Outland and Argus. However, a dark entrapment spell and the intervention of the elder naaru led to his soul being sent back to Outland.[3] Over the following months, Illidan worked to create a gateway to Argus, with the Seal of Argus at the center of the weave to act as a direct link to his destination and guide the energies of the portal.[4] However, before he could finish his preparations, the Black Temple was invaded and he had to resort to sending the Illidari to Mardum to obtain the Sargerite Keystone, an alternate means of reaching Argus.[5][6][7]

The Seal of Argus was still in the Black Temple when Illidan was defeated,[4] but it has not been mentioned since then and its whereabouts are unknown.
