Resource race

From Warcraft Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Resource race is a type of battleground, where victory is attained through gathering resources. Variants of this type of play are often called 'King of the Hill' or 'Domination' games. Resource race is currently the most common type of battleground, with six battlegrounds of this type available to play.

Gameplay

Resources come in various forms, representing gold, territorial rights, or even an overall sense of victory. Whatever the form, resource races hinge on gathering these resources as fast as possible. Whichever team is first to reach the resource target - usually 1600 or 2000 points - will win the match, regardless of number of kills or martial superiority. If the time-limit expires before the target is reached, the team with the highest score will win the game.

Resources

Resources may be accumulated from a variety of sources, depending on the battleground. Capturing bases is a common form of resource generation (Arathi Basin, Battle for Gilneas), while other battlegrounds may reward points for possessing or controlling objects (Temple of Kotmogu, Silvershard Mines) or even for capturing flags (Eye of the Storm).

Whatever the means of generating resources, battlegrounds tend to provide multiple opportunities to do so. Unlike in capture the flag battlegrounds where there may be only a single critical target in play, in resource races, players are required to split their attentions between several targets. This requires a different kind of teamwork, sending players wherever they are needed most as enemy forces surge back and forth between bases, searching for a weak link in their opponents' defences.

Many bases are claimed through actively interacting with a flag - a process easily disrupted by opponents with other thoughts in mind - while others are claimed through sheer strength of numbers, with the team with the largest number of players in the vicinity slowly gaining control of the node - with a small bonus for each honorable kill achieved in the area. Others are picked up with a simple click of the mouse, but will rapidly make the carrier a prime target for the wrath of the opposing team.
