Source
- Rank 1 is learned from [Bursting Seed of Life], looted from the Challenger's Cache at the end of a successful level 4 or higher Mythic dungeon.
- Rank 2 is learned from [Replicating Seed of Abundance], looted from the Challenger's Cache at the end of a successful level 7 or higher Mythic dungeon.
- Rank 3 is learned from [Lingering Seed of Renewal], created by combining 15 [Focused Life Anima], which can be looted from your weekly Grand Challenger's Bounty in Boralus or Dazar'alor.
- Players who have learned Rank 3 of Life-Binder's Invocation, [Anima of Life and Death], or [Essence of the Focusing Iris] on any character have the option to purchase this item for 2,500 [Echoes of Ny'alotha] from MOTHER in the Chamber of Heart.
- Rank 4 is learned from [Seed of Vibrant Blooms], an achievement reward from [Battle for Azeroth Keystone Master: Season Three].
Patch changes
- Hotfix (2020-03-20): Restrictions on acquiring role-specific Azerite Essences from MOTHER have been lifted. Rank 3 tanking, healing, and damage-specific Essences are now grouped together and can be purchased with [Echoes of Ny'alotha] when at least one is unlocked on a character.
- Developers' note: This update to the new Echoes of Ny'alotha system is intended to make Essences much more available to your characters whose specializations put them in different roles (tanking, healing, damage). A side-effect of this change is that even a single character now has a way to obtain these off-role Essences, and can either use Echoes to purchase them from MOTHER or use the original means of acquisition.

- Patch 8.2.0 (2019-06-25): Added.
