This thread has evolved from asking about Mastery and Primary Spells into questions about whether Wowpedia is helpful about topics like this. At least since I started the thread, that's what I think. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 3:27 PM PST 4 Dec 2010

Does anyone understand Mastery and Primary Spells in Patch 4.0.1? Mastery appears to be a talent tree specific rating that you can't get until you are level 80, but Primary Spells somehow appear when you start to spec into a talent tree. You you only get Primary Spells when you have more points in a particular talent tree or just when you start getting any talents in a talent tree? It seems vague and I couldn't find any very good explanations (especially for Primary Spells). --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 11:43 PM PST 26 Nov 2010

What do you mean by Primary Spells? I don't know that I've ever heard that term used before. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 09:11, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
See Patch 4.0.1 (class changes) where "Primary Spells" is used repeatedly. Also from the blue posts where most of that page came from at "Patch 4.0.1 Classes Changes" section of Patch 4.0.1 on live servers this week at MMO-Champion. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 9:44 AM PST 27 Nov 2010
I'm guessing you haven't spent much time in-game since the patch. Basically, you pick a tree and get a couple of key abilities for that tree (the aforementioned Primary Spells). You get them as soon as you put points into the tree, and are unable to get any of the Primary Spells for the other trees. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 20:59, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I haven't played in a few months and probably won't get back into the game until Cataclysm is released. Please put what you know in Primary Spell. It sounds like you now need to be more careful about which tree you put your first points into, which was not true in the past. For new and returning players, this is something they should be warned about. Re-spec'ing is still not free, I assume. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 2:08 PM PST 30 Nov 2010
Oh yeah, you definitely need to do some thinking about where you put your first points in - once you choose a tree, you're locked in for 31 points - level 70! You can't choose anything from the other two trees until level 71. (You can, as before, put all of your points into your chosen specialization.) ~ Colanai [ t / c ] 08:41, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Redirected Primary Spell to Specialization, since that's grown more common to call it. ~ Colanai [ t / c ] 08:42, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm fine with Primary Spell being redirected, but the Specialization article still needs to be updated with new information about talent tree lock-in and an explanation of what a Primary Spell is. As usual, blue post refs would be nice too.
Also, shouldn't you have 61 points at level 70? Or is it that you're locked in until level 40? Or maybe now talent points don't start accumulating until level 40? I'm very confused. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 6:57 PM PST 1 Dec 2010
lol, wow Fan, you really haven't been around in a while if you're so far behind. Talent trees have been completely redesigned and cut down to the 31 talent being the highest, you no longer get talent points every level either. I really don't know where to start on everything else, lol, you've have missed a LOT of changes. :P As for the Primary Spell thing? I don't think it matters much, its a technicality no one really thinks twice about anyway, just the spell you get for chosing your spec, its no different to any other spell. Max Krist (talk) 06:41, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I missed alot. I read up on it more (talent point every 2 levels or so, etc.) and I'm not sure I like the new system. As usual, being a Resto Druid is still kind of boring. Primary Spell is important because it is tied to your spec. That is not like any other spell. Many spells may be affiliated with a spec, but you can get them regardless of spec.
What annoys me is that many pages here have not been updated to reflect the new reality. People just aren't helping out as much as they used to and most people seem to just be sponging off the work of others. This is why I stopped contributing to WoWWiki for awhile even when I was still playing. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 10:05 AM PST 2 Dec 2010
I disagree, there are still other spells which can only be obtained by being a certain spec, for example with my Ret Pally, things like Divine Storm and Repentence can't be used by any other spec. Primary spell just seems like pointless catagorising to me, but thats just my opinion. :) Max Krist (talk) 08:37, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
The point isn't about whether spells can be used by particular talent specs, but whether when someone asks "Hey, I saw something called Primary Spells in a blue post... what are Primary Spells?" We should have a good answer here. Also, if someone wants to know how fast they will accumulate talent points, it should be here and easy to find. The current solution of simple redirecting to Specialization would probably prompt... "Wall of text... didn't read." and it still doesn't answer the question clearly. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 3:24 PM PST 4 Dec 2010
Having had a look at the Specialization atricle I tend to agree, Primary Spells should be an article covering just Primary Spells and of a similar layout to Mastery - so I'm gonna go ahead and write the article, I'll post here once it's complete.
On a different not Specialization does need a hugh cleanup. Wren (talk) 11:02, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Ok done Primary Spells is now an article in it's own right - have a look and see if any further work needs to be done. Cheers Wren (talk) 11:42, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Looks good to me, I think i've changed my mind on the whole validity of the term. :P Max Krist (talk) 01:54, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Perfect. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 12:15 AM PST 9 Dec 2010
