The <imagelink> extension has been deprecated by new built-in image links. As noted on Help:Displaying images:

Can I link images to articles?

Yes, using the new link= syntax introduced in MediaWiki 1.14. The following are all valid usages of the link ability:

This is best used for navigational images, such as shown by on the circular images on here. Note, this technique only works with unframed/unthumbnailed images.

<imagelink> is only deprecated for internal images. However, we should be linking to external images only very sparingly. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:12 PM PST 8 May 2009
Aye, absolutely true, it should only be used for navigational images. Kirkburn  talk  contr 23:31, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm gonna see about getting a list of what pages continue to use imagelink, so they can be fixed, and we might be rid of this extension. Kirkburn  talk  contr 12:43, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Here we go, a simple list of all pages still using imagelink: Forum:Image links/list. The content pages and templates are probably highest importance. I think some could be botted? Kirkburn  talk  contr 16:17, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Most of these are links to the classes with their icons or the playable races with their icons. I've created class and race to make it easier. --k_d3 17:25, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Cool, nice work. :) Kirkburn  talk  contr 14:13, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Update... Nearly all of the imagelinks are gone minus a few pages like Molten Core that depend a little too heavily upon hotlinking that need to be fixed. As soon as Special:TagsReport updates I'll update the external list... --k_d3 23:12, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

Btw, there are a few cases where we may still want to use external navigational images - Zeal's signature, for example, uses images off his server combined with links to his user pages. I wonder, though, whether anyone has any bright ideas how to get around that? We don't have to turn off imagelink entirely after the bot's done, as long as everyone knows they shouldn't use it :P Kirkburn  talk  contr 23:17, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

Ok. I've whittled us down to grand total of 7 (seriously!) pages still using imagelink. See Forum:Image links/list. Let's fix those 7 pages then we can kill the extension. --k_d3 00:47, September 16, 2009 (UTC)
Great work, kd3! Kirkburn  talk  contr 12:19, September 16, 2009 (UTC)
I give you permission to break my user pages by removing imagelink support. I want to leave the code there for historical reasons. I will fix the Blizzard folks page usage eventually, but it isn't important. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:24 PM PST 16 Sep 2009
Last call! Special:TagsReport has been updated (finally). If you see any pages in the server-generated list (mirrored at Forum:Image links/list, fix them. They are about to break. --k_d3 21:20, September 24, 2009 (UTC)
