The Crystal of Zin-Malor is a powerful relic that can contain and control strong arcane forces.[1] Its bearer becomes capable of incredible arcane power, but only if truly worthy.[2]

History

The crystal originally resided at the Temple of Zin-Malor in Azshara, but at some point it was stolen by the Highborne from the city of Kel'Theril in Winterspring.[2][3] Its ability to control the arcane was too tempting, and when it was toyed with, its shattering cursed the Highborne. Kel'Theril suffered until the Great Sundering destroyed it for good, and now the dead wander the ruins as ghosts.[3][4]

One hundred years ago, a group of high elves led by Archmage Maenius came from Quel'Thalas to Winterspring in search of the crystal. They found its shards, but like the Highborne of millennia before they too ended up as ghosts wandering the ruins.[5] Decades years later, Aurora Skycaller managed to forge the relic's shattered pieces together with the help of an adventurer.[6] It was then brought to Darnassus and given to one who would not abuse its power, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm.[2]

Several years later the crystal returned to Winterspring by means unknown and was one of the magical treasures held by Umbranse the Spiritspeaker.[7] A third group of elves, this time blood elves, were turned into wretched by its power.[8] One year after they became wretched Umbranse was slain by an adventurer, but the crystal was not recovered. Its current location remains unknown.

Source

Obtained during A [58] The Crystal of Zin-Malor in Winterspring, after gathering a number of items from across the world.

Notes

  • The crystal was initially an equipable uncommon trinket before being changed into a quest item in Wrath of the Lich King. Upon being equipped, it would deem the player unworthy and drain their mana and health until they unequipped it, or died. Players would often choose to not turn in the quest, so they could hold onto the crystal and use it to kill themselves when needed. It could be used to bypass locked doors or shorten flight paths, especially since it did not cause armor damage.
