Hello from Wikia

Hi there, I work for Wikia and wanted to say hi! I am working with our engineering team on features and functionality to make founding and contributing to wikis easier, and have been reaching out to successful wiki founders for advice and feedback. I would love to hear and learn about some of the things you have done to really foster the the wow wiki community, as well as your suggestions/recommendations for things that don't exist yet, but would be very useful in developing your community further! Need more reverts of Puta20 changes or a ban

The vandal Puta20 has been very active lately. I think you should seriously consider banning/killing this account.

Since Oct. 22, Puta20 has made nearly 5000 spam edits. He's hiding website links, messing up formatting, and clogging the history for individual pages and the wiki as a whole. I understand that vandalism will always be a problem, and there will always be corrections to be made, but that's assuming that prompt administrative action will be taken against the offenders. It's futile to try and maintain the integrity of WoWWiki's articles when competing against a bot. I wish it were that easy =/ Both Puta20 (whom I flubbed up the block for last time and had it expire too soon) and the new one DudaKum are coming in from hundreds of different addresses, so I can't block by IP. I can put in a limit to number of changes in some unit of time, but they're only doing about one change every 1 or 2 minutes; not all that different from, say, someone going through and making a bunch of small spelling corrections. I do agree about needing more admins; however, I've got a new machine for the wiki to move to and I'm going to upgrade to the latest MediaWiki with that move, so I wanted to get that done before doing new sysops. That'll be another week or so.. things are mostly set up, just having some problems with apache on the new machine, but should be resolved soon. Rustak 03:03, 6 Nov 2005 (EST)

The latest MediaWiki should automatically insert the nofollow tag in any external links, making what Puta20 is doing pointless. Hopefully he will become aware of that fact. Just reading up on some other techniques; it sounds like it should be possible to block the URLs he is trying to link to from being added to any pages.--Aeleas 13:53, 6 Nov 2005 (EST)

Weird New Wiki Addition

There seems to be a guild specific subwiki taking up residence at Riddle. Not sure what the WoWWiki policy on this is. -- Brandonh6k (18 May 2005)

Vandalism Reverts

HTML tags

In Wikipedia, you can use tags like SPAN, and possibly A. SPAN is pretty important. We should be able to use it here, but it doesn't work. Can you fix this? :Schmidt talk 03:01, 31 Oct 2005 (EST)

Your thinking wrong - this is webware, as in the software that is running this site. Same software that runs Wikipedia - I have two wikis myself (gunwiki and a wiki for my guild) aalong with a localwiki that is installed on this laptop soely for the purpose of getting articles put together and lookign schnazzy before uploading them to one of the wikis when I'm offline. You would have no use for it unless you have a webserver installed on your comp (with PHP and mySQL) --  _ℑilver§^ℑide 22:50, 13 Dec 2005 (EST)

P.S. You are thinking of a frontend to the wiki on your computer - I am sure it would be easy to set up a simple java webstart app and a php interface for the SQL, then edit through that, but there would be no real advantage...

Interwiki Links

When using an interwiki link such as [[wikipedia:World of Warcraft|Wikipedia article on WoW]], it directs you to www.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft. There is an ongoing discussion on making www. links to wikipedia articles show a multilingual portal, so I would reccommend have interwiki links direct to en.wikipedia.org as opposed to www.wikipedia.org. Language page locked

The Languages page is locked. I'm assuming that was done back when there was that plugin that translated the other faction's speech. Since that's no longer a problem, can it be unlocked? It'd be nice to be able to expand it to include other languages (Demonic, Titan, Sindrassi) and other content. Thanks either way!

Welcome back

• i noticed this minor bug on any sections you can edit. for instance Patches, if you edit the section for patch 1.5, then commit. there will be 1 carriage return missing, thus pushing 1.5 and 1.4 1.6 closer together. CJ 10:35, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

MediaWiki has lots of weirdness with carriage returns, it's an artifact of the fact that one (1) carriage return is parsed into a zero-width non-joiner space (&zwnj;=‌) whereas two is parsed into a new paragraph (/p + p) - thus the end of the editing area is always pulls out a return. it is all very confusing and took me a while to figure out... --  _ℑilver§^ℑide 12:34, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)

H3

Using <h3>this</h3> header caption. causes subsequent edit tags to be messed up.

As far as I know, it's not easily fixable without hacking the code, because the wiki uses H1,H2,H3 internally for headings. Possibly it's been fixed in a later MW version. --Mikk 22:42, 24 July 2006 (EDT)

Searching, and CSS

I think the internal search is perfected, so maybe instead of having just the Google search have both, or just ditch the Google search, eh? I think the internal search is quite a bit better. Or best yet, I think maybe have a search set up like on Wikipedia, where they have the option to search Google and Yahoo (I think it is). Do you think you could pull off something like that?

Also, would it be alright (if possible) to make it so Fandyllic and I could add classes to a common CSS file that is linked from all articles? I mean, something like template:tooltipcss, so that we can just use a code such as <div class="tooltip">. Schmidt 19:58, 16 April 2006 (EDT)

Math and Wiki

As asked already here, here and here, i think <math></math> inline tags support should be added to provide better functionality to people writing formulas.

This is a non trivial task that only some skilled admin could perform, since it includes:

• installing and configuring TeX (or wikitex)
• setting up appropriate wiki variables

Can I have an answer to that?

Yep, 1.7.1 is on the todo list, as is getting a new icon in place, and enabling CSS editing. I'm hoping in the next 2 weeks; I'll be in physical proximity with the wiki machine at that point, which will make doing some of these upgrades much more pleasant. Admins

I have a plea to make. Since you are likely to be around a little more in the next few weeks, we need more admins. Alex and Schmidt are not around all that frequently at the moment, which means the burden is lying on Fandyllic. Today, whilst Fandyllic was busy, we had a awful attack of the vandals which we could barely control (he impersonated fandyllic and went after popular pages and new users). So basically, I'm asking that more are allowed into upper echelons to aid with the safe running of the wiki :) I know who I would suggest, but obviously Fandyllic should be the main person to converse with on this.

Upgrade bugs

Another bug: When using one of the wiki-tags <dt></dt> or <dd></dd>, the closing tag will be rendered as plain text (the starting tag will work fine though). This affected the whole wiki, not just newly written or edited articles.

Example: API_GetGuildRosterSelection Zelgadis 23:36, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

• Based on previously working pages (Help:Images_and_other_uploaded_files and others) it seems the wiki use to display images if they were a direct link to the image http://.... and it no longer does. I think this is actually better because it makes it easier to find images that we may be leaching off of other servers, however, thought I would bring it up in case it was not desired.--Ralthor 22:11, 5 September 2006 (EDT)

InterWiki (bis repetita)

Hi Rustak,

I sent you an email but I think here might be a better place to contact you. Sorry if I'm spamming you. On this InterWiki system we talked about a few weeks back, I thought maybe I should explain how easy it is to implement.

In the SQL database, there's a table named "interwiki". There are a lot of entries. One of them is "fr", and the cell next to it is empty. Now if you add "http://www.wikiwow.com/index.php/" in that empty cell, people will be able to use the [[fr:]] tag. This will automatically create a link to the french version of the article. For instance "Duskwood". Assuming you updated the database, I could go to the Duskwood article, and add [[fr:Bois de la Pénombre]]. This would add a "Français" link at the bottom of the left menu, linking to the correct article. Of course, we could do the same for the german wiki, etc.

Now, of course this is a win-win situation for the less-known Wikis (namely French and German ones) ; since I suppose it would increase our traffic. But it would also be nice for visitors. WoWWiki could be a translating tool. They lookup the name in either of the language, and find the translation to the other languages via the link to the other languages. Maybe there are other advantages I didn't think of, too.

I've set up a {{lang}} template that attaches itself to the bottom of the page and (by default) assumes that there's a page of the same name on the german and french wikis (possibly redirect pages). If necessary, the links can be tweaked - see the template. For an example, see Duskwood.

This sort of works, but it's not really usable inside pages, and the external link image is a bit unnecessary perhaps. Interlanguage links would sort that. But at least we've got a start?   --Mikk (T) 14:23, 6 September 2006 (EDT)

Yeah, the icon is nice :) And maybe we can count on the people getting used to scroll to the bottom (or beginning as Kirkburn suggested) if they look for the article in another language. May I start adding this template to articles? Searches and ads

I don't think we need the google search any more, the wiki search appears to be working just fine :) Special:Search. Also, is it possible we can set up a way to block more gold sites please? The gold ads have come back, and it's really not good for our image - especially with the very obvious ad on the nav bar - could you not swap them and have the smaller one there? -- Kirkburn (talk) 18:52, 7 September 2006 (EDT)

• On a related note; one small image issue. When you use the Google search, there is a broken image. In particular, the image link here: http://www.wowwiki.com/skins/common/images/wiki-100.jpg. While the image is fine, I assume it's a hotlink issue that won't allow the Google site to display the image. RiSK 17:34, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
