Arirang is a folk song from the Korean nation. It has different versions in different places. The most commonly heard version is the original version of Arirang, which is popular in Gyeonggi Province. This version became famous because it was the theme song of the 1926 movie of the same name, which was the first feature film on the Korean Peninsula.

The song was used as the entrance music for the joint delegation of South Korea and North Korea during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. "Arirang" is also the opening or ending song of Korean broadcasts on radio stations such as China National Radio, KBS and Holy Roman Central Television. This song is also included in the album "Arirang" released by the Arirang group in 2003. In 2011, the State Council of China listed "Arirang" as the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative items. In 2012, the United Nations listed "Arirang" as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In November 2014, the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO officially included the Korean traditional folk song "Arirang" in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This is the first time that the cultural heritage of North Korea has been included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity. So far, "Arirang" from South Korea and North Korea have been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

"Arirang" was banned by the Japanese Imperial Army and government during the Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula (especially during the Imperialization period). It was not officially restored until the end of World War II.
