Updated keybindings

Major features: I now have the keybindings mapped to 13 action-bar slots (main action bar, +1 button). This makes it very easy (looking at a single action bar) to see which button gives a particular action (in case I forget).

Nostromo mapping for main keys is

  • 1 2 3 4 5
  • 6 7 8 9 0
  • shift F9 F10 F11

Orange thumb button is ctrl. Game-pad is forward/strafe/flip-camera Mouse-wheel (mouse and nostromo) is zoom and toggle-autorun

Theme has changed from (some keys for dps, some keys for heal) to unshifted=dps, shifted=heal, ctrl=forms/items. Almost all single-target spells will use mouseover targets in preference to my current target. I'm still not using focus (noob).

Combat related things I still have to click, or move hand to main keyboard

  • Food
  • Drink
  • Other Items (different drums, quest items, ...)
  • Faerie Fire (caster) -> May bind to ctrl+shift+8
  • Soothe Animal
  • Target Previous Enemy
  • Target Party Members

Additonal notes: From caster form, ctrl+shift+1 is Attack.

  • The stuff below here is obsolete

TLDR Version: First takes on switching from clicking to keybinding.

I got an n52 keypad for my birthday. I've always been a mouse-clicker, but I decided to jump in and try switching to using my keys.

The n52 has three rows of keys, which by default are bound to

  • <tab> Q W E R
  • <caps> A S D F
  • <shift> Z X C

It has a scroll wheel at the 'V' position, bound to the mouse scroll wheel.

The thumb gets two buttons and an eight-direction game pad. The buttons are initially bound to <alt> and <space>. I changed <alt> to <ctrl> to avoid Windows <alt><tab> behavior. The game pad was bound to something not recognized by WoW, so I changed it to be the outer ring of keypad numbers (1-9, excluding 5).

It is possible to designate keys to make the n52 shift between 4 modes (indicated by color LED's), with entirely separate key bindings for each mode. I'm not using that, at least so far.

The setup I went with was

  • Default mouse settings, except that clicking the scroll wheel toggles auto-run.
  • n52 gamepad is used for forward/back/strafe
  • <space> is jump/up. <shift><space> is sit/down.

I assigned the three rows of keys to

  • Targetting/Forms
  • Moonkin Combat
  • Restoration

Tab Q W E R
> Friendly < Friendly Assist < Hostile > Hostile
Ctrl Self Party 1 Party 2 Party 3 Party 4
Shift Mount Macro Bear Cat Travel Macro Moonkin
Caps A S D F
Auto-attack Wrath Starfire Insect Swarm MF 12
Ctrl Cyclone Roots Hibernate FoN MF 11
Shift Nature's Grasp Barkskin Faerie Fire Hurricane MF 1
Shift Z X C
Regrowth Rejuvinate Lifebloom
Ctrl Healing Touch Abolish Poison Remove Curse
Shift Tranquility Mana Potion Drink

After a weekend of battlegrounds and grinding, I was correctly using all of the un-modified keys, and the modified versions of the top row of keys. The <ctrl> and <shift> versions of the bottom two rows still need more training. Dropping Hurricane, when I wanted to drop FoN is funny in retrospect ... .

I'm thinking about swapping the positions of Wrath and Insect Swarm. Pinky finger already gets a workout from <shift>. Making it also do Wrath-spam is wearing it out.

I may change the binding of that <caps> key. Using it in combat meant that I was SHOUTING a lot in chat.

Previously I had the 4 main healing spells (HT, Rb, Rj, Lb) only on my caster-form bar, so I had to explicitly switch to caster before casting a heal. I really enjoyed single-press Lifebloom from within MK. However moving those to my right toolbar meant something had to go, so I now have to go to my spellbook for professions (LW, FA, Cooking), and to my backpack for my fishing pole.

I still have to mouse-click or use the main keyboard for trinkets, drums, weapon swaps, buffs, shadowmeld, ...

One thing I don't like with this settup is that I can strafe, but not easily turn while I have a Ground-Target AoE indicator up. That isn't much of an issue for FoN. It is a considerable nuisance while doing bombing runs in BEM. If I use the mouse to turn (or change altitude) I lose the targetting indicator. I can move my left hand to the main keyboard and use the arrow-keys for turning, but then my fingers are out of position for strafing or changing altitude.

If you've got suggested improvements, I'd love to see them.
