What about unknown archive dates?

This is inspired by a blue post of the type mentioned above, but it probably applies to any archive site, and hell, that conversation is 4 years old...

Why is archivedate a required parameter? Many times the date of archiving is not listed (and is unimportant since the archived information wouldn't change after its original publication). We simply know when the original was published (date), and when the archive was accessed (accessdate). This is perfectly sufficient. The example on the main citations guidelines page just uses the same archivedate as it does date - can we simply make it optional? - Jerodast (talk) 19:16, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
