Sunder Armor functionality

The section stating that Sunder Armor is more effective against lower armor targets is incorrect. The effectiveness of Sunder Armor is the same no matter how much armor the opponent has.

An example. Formulas (for a level 70) stated for reference.

    Damage Reduction = Armor / (Armor+10557.5)
    Effective Health = Health / (1 - Damage Reduction)
                     = Health / (1 - (Armor / (Armor+10557.5))

If a level 70 has 10000 health and 0 armor, their effective health against melee attacks is 10000. If our melee attacks deal 100 damage, the level 70 will die in 100 attacks. If a level 70 has 10000 health and 500 armor, their effective health is now ~10474. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 104.74 attacks. If a level 70 has 10000 health and 1000 armor, their effective health is now ~10947. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 109.5 attacks.

Skipping ahead a few thousand armor....

If a level 70 has 10000 health and 5000 armor, their effective health is now ~14736. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 147.4 attacks. If a level 70 has 10000 health and 5500 armor, their effective health is now ~15210. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 152.1 attacks.

Notice that the increase in effective health and number of require attacks is the same in all cases, ~474 effective health and 4.7 more attacks. Increasing armor by 500 (or any other constant value) is as effective at 0 armor as it is at 5000 or 10000 armor.

This is counter intuitive, because the % of damage reduction decreases per point of armor. It is, ironically, the opposite problem from many misunderstandings of haste effects (i.e 100% haste doesn't grant a swing time of 0.0 seconds).

Decreasing or increasing armor does increase in effectiveness against enemies with higher hp.

If a level 70 has 10000 health and 500 armor, their effective health is now ~10474. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 104.74 attacks. Reducing their armor by 500 will reduce their effective hp by 474, and the number of attacks by 4.74. If a level 70 has 20000 health and 500 armor, their effective health is now ~20948. Our attacks will kill the 70 in 209.48 attacks. Reducing their armor by 500 will reduce their effective hp by 948, and the number of attacks by 9.48.

Threat scaling through ranks.

It can be theorized that the threat for sunder armour, no matter ranks, is ~0.58 per armour reduced. You can check this with an easy test:

    Rank 6: 520 armour reduced, 301 threat. [301 / 520 = 0.57884615385] which is ~0.58.
    Rank 5: 450 armour reduced, 261 threat. [261 / 450 = 0.58].

So, the following ranks should be:

    Rank 4: 360 armour reduced. [360 * 0.58 = 208.8] Around 208-210 threat.
    Rank 3: 270 armour reduced. [270 * 0.58 = 156.6] Around 155-157 threat.
    Rank 2: 180 armour reduced. [180 * 0.58 = 104.4] Around 103-104 threat.
    Rank 1: 90 armour reduced. [90 * 0.58 = 52.2] Around 52 threat.

Old Information

Removed some outdated sections. Included below. Also changed the outdated threat/level/cost/armor reduced table, and replaced it with a more up-to-date one.

  • Compared to a Rogue's [Expose Armor], the rogue can apply their full effect (5 combo points) sunder much sooner than a Warrior, if reducing the mob's armor is the goal for a group. The Expose Armor effect will block an application of Sunder Armor, however. Also, a full stack (5) of Sunder Armor usually has a greater armor reduction than a 5-combo-point Expose Armor (2600 reduction for Sunder Armor, 2050 for Expose Armor). A rogue with 2/2 [Improved Expose Armor], however, can best the Sunder Armor number, with a final reduction of 3075 armor. Again, be wary of using Expose Armor on mobs that need to be tanked, as a warrior will have a very difficult time establishing aggro on a mob that they are blocked from using Sunder Armor upon.


  • Sunder Armor's armor reducing effect is more effective against targets that already have a low armor value, since it increases the damage boost against them by a larger percentage. See also: Formulas:Damage reduction for more information on the physical damage reduction armor provides.
