Dreadmaw in 3.0

  • So I got the opportunity to do the event twice since 3.0.2 went live (lucky with darkrunes). Both times I failed miserably on Dreadmaw. In 2.0 i killed Shartuul himself twice and downed Dreadmaw without much hazzle. So today I was kiting him as normal in aspect of fire, but once he got to ~15 growth (which shouldnt be anything out of the ordinary) his hitbox got so big that it just wasnt possible to outrun him and he steamrolled me in melee both times. It felt like he could hit me over half the field, and the area to kite him in was just to small. I cant see any changes to him, mob pathing, how model sizes affect melee ranges or whatever in the patchnotes. Anyone else noticed? (Or did i just suck, twice) Ibliz (talk) 03:08, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
    • Seems it was an effect of the lowered dps due to the Flame Buffet bug in 3.0.2 as Jcilley pointed out in the article Ibliz (talk) 18:57, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Reward

  • What's the reward for completing the event?
    • This is potentially inaccurate, but from reading, I believe the final boss of this event is Shartuul (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=23230), so his loot table is the rewards. Also, there appears to be a small number of epics off him (eg [Corruptor's Signet]) I have not started the event myself, so I'd appreciate any comments from people who have actually done it.--Eltari 23:25, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
      • That's correct. You also get 20 apexis shards for completing each stage, for 60 total. Flowers 22:28, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Demon Abilities

  • I'd like this page to show a trimmed screenshot of each demon's ability bar. This will help folks connect what they're reading on this page with how to use the abilities during the event. The few seconds before each fight starts is not much time to associate each icon with the corresponding ability. I'll put these screenshots in eventually but I don't know how long it'll take me to get all three of demon #3's bars. --Mattlistener 24 June 2007
I have implemented the above using wowwiki's built-in WoW Icons. --Mattlistener 6 July 2007
  • Does Fel Flames last longer than 3 seconds now? --Mattlistener 24 June 2007
yes, lasts around 30 seconds now and is channeled --Pupapaya 10:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Are you sure about it being channeled? I've seen several references to having complete control of your demon while Fel Flames is up, and have experienced this myself (though I haven't done the event since 24 June). --Mattlistener 27 June 2007
yes, this was changed in 2.1.2, before that it was indeed not channeled and you could move--Pupapaya 20:48, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
Well I have to disagree on this one. At this writing you can pop Fel Flames and move, use other abilities, etc. It continues to do damage for the whole 30 seconds. It may have been Blizzard's intention to make it channeled but that's not how it's working at the moment. I'll revisit this question after the next patch. --Mattlistener 3 July 2007
The bar suggests a possible 15, 20, or even 30 second breath. Thing is, while you're able to move and even use other abilities, it ends prematurely. I'm sure motion doesn't do it, but other abilities to seem to end it. I've had it stopped when just standing there, getting hit might affect it. Or possibly the breath is supposed to last 5sec? The whole event's somewhat buggy, can't be sure. Posted after 2.3.2 release. --Falos 10:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Fel Breath stops prematurely when you switch to a new target (if your current target dies, it'll continue until you target a new mob).Flowers 18:05, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
  • The Healing section reads: "All Aspects - Chaos Strike: Using Chaos Strike while the target is affected by Siphon Life will apply a weakness debuff on the target which will highly increase the damage taken." What is this debuff actually called and how long does it last? --Mattlistener 6 July 2007
I think it's http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=41965 but I haven't used Chaos Strike in forever. -- Jeffrey0 03:25, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Are there key bindings that work for the demon abilities? They appear on the same level as my druid shape shifting buttons which are Ctrl-F1..F5, but Ctrl-F* does not appear to trigger the abilities in my brief attempts (before I was forced to click to live). 66.0.13.200 21:59, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Failing that, does anyone know the /commands that would go in a macro so I can create an action bar? Thoth 17:31, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Keybindings are Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-=, assuming default UI setup. You should be able to /use the abilites by ability name as with any other pet but I haven't tried this. -- Jeffrey0 03:25, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Learning Curve?

  • How hard is it to learn? i.e. how many attempts should I expect to do before I get it down? --Viper007Bond 09:47, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
I have tried it close to 10 times so far and I still can't survive the first boss. I would recommend that you try it every single time you get the darkrune. You can't exactly save them up (although you can stockpile the charged crystal focus). I assume failing the event does not cost you a repair bill (even though your character appears to die). Eventually you'll get better and better until you can win the event. Thoth 17:36, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Did it on my fourth rune, wiping on the first phase once and the second phase pre-boss 2 times. I consider phase 2 the hardest. Your first few runs will go really, really slow though - I didn't realize flame buffet existed until the Eye of Shartuul was nearly dead. -- Jeffrey0 03:25, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
After reading this excellent page, on my first attempt i actually made it to the last boss of the third demon. However, it took me 4 tries to finally down him (although one of the tries may have been consumed by an unlucky Fear resist on the first demon's boss). --Corrodias 00:43, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Charged Crystal Focus

How many Charged Crystal Focuses should you bring to this event? I guess 10 would probably be more than enough, does anyone have any thoughts on this? Airwave 00:25, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

You want 3. One is for the second demon's boss, as it's very convenient to use his Dive-Bomb ability when the boss comes out, which clears all the remaining enemies and does heavy damage to the boss. The other two are for the third demon's third boss, so you can use her special healing trick if necessary, which is outlined in the article. --Corrodias 00:44, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
It's possible to do the event without any, but it takes some luck on Shartuul's ability timing. Personally, I find reaching Shartuul focus-less easy, while requiring two shots of Chaos Strike (four focii) a longer and likelier phase. --Falos 10:43, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Bindings

I just ran this event twice, died on the first boss once, and at the 2nd Mo'arg in phase 2 the second time. You really need bind's for all the 'pet' attacks, as it's easy to lose track of whats going on if you have to look at the pet hotbar. I ended up having 3 fel cannons out that I never noticed til I started taking damage. Another detriment to not using binds is when stunning - I had to target and run away, and then 'Jump Stun' because by the time I found the Jump hotbar item they were too close.

Anyone put a tutorial on binding them (dont see anything in keybind options), or reccomendations on other useful macros for this event? I'd also like to bind regular attack for the demon if thats possible. --Hakuryu 23:57, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

I use trinitybars so binding is as easy as mousing over. However, with only a few moves per demon, I didn't have trouble quickly finding each button after learning the event. Regular attack is like regular pet attack - personally I just use "shift-t" since I'm used to it with my hunter.CCMCornell 18:28, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Got a good setup now, I use 8 macro's - /click petactionbutton1; ... through /click petactionbutton8; . Works perfectly and makes the event much easier for me.--Hakuryu 20:06, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

2.2 and Shartuul

In 2.2, the first demon's ultimate ability has been fixed. I removed warnings about the bugged version.

Apparently, the 3rd demon's death blast/siphon life combo does not work, making the last phase much more difficult. The author who originally noted the bug on the article's page described it as near impossible without "extensive abuse" of crystal foci - whatever that means; they're not controlled substances. On my first try on 2.2, I was able to complete the event using 3 crystal foci during the final fight with Shartuul, one with the Eye and one just before fighting the asssassin using the second demon. I did not know death blast was broken, so I did expect big heals following the Chaos Strikes, but I did benefit from the extra DPS. Prior to 2.2, I only used one focus to complete the event (just before fighting the assassin with the second demon's bombing run.) So, yes, clearly it took more foci to comfortably beat Shartuul but I was still able to maintain about 40% health during the entire fight against Shartuul himself just from Siphon Life and Shadow Nova. Using 4 extra foci doesn't seem at all "extensive abuse" of special abilities considering when I was first learning the event I used that many, but hopefully they will fix the death blast spell since spending 4 or 5 foci every time you can do Shartuul's event doesn't seem sustainable given the rate at which we find the depleted foci.

Other notes on 2.2: the second demon did not go airborne for his bombing run. Instead, it seemed that the spell reflect and bombs were active while I was running around and casting normal abilities on the Shivan boss which made taking her down somewhat faster though the leftover trash and cannons were not totally wiped out until just before the assassin died.

Also, the 2nd demon the assassin faces, Shartuul's dog, seems to be more effective with its charge ability in catching up with you, making his melee attacks more of a threat.

Lastly, the mind flay animation of the eye stalks seems to be working. One or more may mind flay the assassin. These eye stalks now despawn after Shartuul dies instead of hanging around and keeping people stuck in combat until they were killed. CCMCornell 18:28, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

In the latest patch 2.2, all the Eye Stalks mind flay you constantly (if you are in range). Thought it was a bug, but Shadow Nova takes care of them.--Hakuryu 20:03, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

One shadow nova will kill all the eye stalks around you, giving you a safe spot to cast from, switch to shadow form whenever you see the tentacle spawn animations --js1006 15:19, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Other event bugs?

After fearing the first boss out of the ring while fighting him, I ended up killing him while he was still partially outside the ring. Doing this caused the event to end prematurely. Not sure this qualifies as a bug to appear in the section in the main article, but it's certainly something worth noting. JoeR410 09:08, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

I've had Shartuul appear and do the eye dialogue, then nothing happened until I lost hope and aborted. Seemed random.
It's worth noting that deathblast-siphonlife combos might seem buggy, but launching a siphon life immediately after a deathblast means the point blank debuff will land before the blast's projectile. That is, a "consume debuff, add new debuff" combo might become a "overwritten debuff, consume new debuff" flop.
Also, I've noticed a very long pause is needed before attemting to shadow nova a fresh spawn of tentacles. I don't think this is a latency issue, I've had a nova do utterly nothing against tentacles that were fully spawned and had been mind flaying for perhaps one second. --Falos 10:49, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I've had Shartuul refuse to spawn the eye as well. Talked to a GM and he indicated that add ons were causing the issue. If that was just a scapegoat or not, we'll see. If I see the event bug without add ons running, we'll know for sure. I've also noticed that all mobs after you get control of the Assassin have about 2-3 seconds of immunity where they will ignore anything cast on them. Really annoying when the tentacles spawn and you waste your shadow nova and don't kill a single one. To combat this, cast a death blast before trying to shadow nova or siphon life them. For the tentacles, I hit shadow form when I see them getting ready to spawn and then use shadow nova on a patch of them that were already up. Never worry about the tentacles ignoring your spell--Satarus 16:53, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Satarus 1 January 2008

One thing I've seen is fighting the second boss - sometimes she'll run outside of the area, and attempts to use abilities on her will fail (i.e., the arena walls are obstacles that affect you, but that she can ignore). As she's a caster, the only real way to get her back inside is to run out of range, wait for her to run in, and then re-engage (at a significant cost in health).

Also, do not attempt to start the event if you see someone else also trying to. The one time I did that, it was a complete botch, and we both lost our darkrunes without the event going anywhere. (We could both move the demon, and possibly neither of us could use special abilities.) Flowers 15:41, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Darkrune Drop Rate

The text said 25% chance of getting a complete darkrune from Kronk's bag but thottbot and my personal experience says it's much much lower than this (thottbot says ~6.5%). I removed it unless and until someone can cite a source for the 25% yield.
