Explosion or Implosion?
I'd like someone to clarify what exactly the Sundering was. The official history [1] refers to it both as an explosion and an implosion. The War of the Ancients trilogy makes it seem more like a vortex which tore pieces off and sucked them into the Well, depicting it as being slow enough for an army to march from near Suramar to Mount Hyjal. The Maelstrom is still drawing whole islands towards what is left of the Well, suggesting that during the Sundering itself this effect was much greater. And yet certain features of the new coastline are more typical of an explosion than an implosion. Of course it could just be a retcon, but I'd still like to know what the current lore is. - They do seem to use both words and I am not sure which is correct or if they both are correct? To me, it didn't read like a vortex tearing pieces off. If I remember, they said that the "water" from the Well was spreading outwards in all directions. I think if the "water" touched anything it died since everyone was running from it and I don't think they ever found anyone alive that was overrun by it. The Well then started pulling the "water" back and it imploded when it was all focused back to the original size. Now, the Maelstrom is still drawing things towards it but at a fraction of what happened during the War of the Ancients. Meanwhile, the Well "sank" when it imploded and even went through the floor of the sea bed. I am not sure how far it bore through the planet. I might be wrong, but it seems to be like the opposite of a tidal wave. In a tidal wave, the water suddenly recedes from the coast/beach. Afterwards, the tidal wave moves towards the coast/beach and with it of course a lot of water. This was the opposite and it was "magical water" if that makes any difference. Also, the Well was in the middle of land. The "water" spread every which way from its original position. Afterwards, the "water" receded all into the original size of the Well and imploded. Rolandius

- Even more confusingly, several very odd effects are attributed to the sundering, that make no sense when you interpret it as an explosion, implosion OR vortex. The hollowing out of stonetalon mountain comes to mind, as well as somehow blocking the water flowing through thousand needles. Ijffdrie (talk) 01:15, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
