More subsections

This list could do with more subsections in my opinion. The "Fansites" listing especially could be broken up.   --Mikk (T) 17:00, 26 September 2006 (EDT)

Whee. Much better. Nice job Kirkburn!   --Mikk (T) 10:19, 27 September 2006 (EDT)

Valid site but in the wrong place (was placed above Thott and Alla). HOWEVER the frontpage of the site has a RL-work-for-wow-gold scheme, which, to me, is the same as buying wow gold, just with a different currency.   --Mikk (T) 11:01, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
On further research, part of the site seems to be dedicated to hacks and exploits, so all mention of it and related sites should be removed from the wiki (wow-patches.com being the other main example). -- Kirkburn (talk) 12:01, 11 October 2006 (EDT)

Popular sites edit war

This has got to stop. A good idea is to check http://www.alexa.com for the traffic rankings for the websites.

  • Thottbot - 611 [1]
  • Alla - 961 [2] (72% WoW traffic)
  • Wowhead - 16,834 [3]
  • Goblin Workshop - 15,064 [4]
  • WoWGuru - 30,179 [5]
  • TenTonHammer - 23,187 [6] (~50% WoW traffic)
  • Gameamp - 17,888 [7] (15% WoW traffic only)
  • WoWd - 1,000,000 [8]

I'd say it's pretty obvious what belongs 'up there' and what doesn't, no? -- Kirkburn (talk) 05:08, 5 October 2006 (EDT)

I stopped editing anyways , also a good measure is the google pagerank , which is also quite relevant and should be factored in , here is the aggregated order.

--Mancini 05:40, 8 October 2006 (EDT)

Interesting stuff, Mancini. Except I don't understand the numbers :-)   Can you do a short explanation or point me in the direction of one? Thanks!   --Mikk (T) 10:36, 8 October 2006 (EDT)
The Google Pagerank as displayed in the toolbar is a integrer in the range 1 to 10 , for extensive detail see http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html --Mancini 15:50, 8 October 2006 (EDT)
The only reason why he suggests Google Rank is because it favors WoWd, if Google Rank had been chosen and Alexa favored WoWd he would have said lets use Alexa. The constant vying for position by squeezing the links in anywhere he can get them is really getting annoying. -- Gryphon 12:26, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
*shrug* even though it has an ok google pagerank, the Alexa ranking is so far off that there's obviously a huge discrepancy between sites pointing at wowd and people actually using it. I agree that the google PR can be used to solve close calls, but in this case it's clearly irrelevant.   --Mikk (T) 12:49, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
I couldn't care less what is used, my frustration is with his constant editing of pages in order to promote WoWd. -- Gryphon 12:54, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
Like i said , i stopped edditing anyways , i take it you are with ign too , or with wowhead directly since the same behaviour by its promoters does not "frustrate" you.--Mancini 14:00, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
I am not with anyone at all, though I prefer to use Thottbot mainly because I am comfortable with it and it has a good additional comment information. I just hate biased self promotion. -- Gryphon 14:04, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
Yea , well , imagine how much more frustrated you would be and how much you would hate it if that biased self promotion affected you directly , that is links suddenly being brushed aside by new beta databases out of nowhere , i would had not started to monitor this damn page if not for that , and i have no pleasure in it either , and you have no say in this because you have no implication.--Mancini 03:17, 10 October 2006 (EDT)
Well the fact that wowhead is moving up in popularity isn't because of where it sits in a wiki listing. It is a very clean, fast and readable, I would use it myself if it had more comments which is more useful than just a database of items alone. WoWd has been around a long time, and personally I think it is very ugly and hard to read and not memorable. That is my opinion. I know exactly what it is all about, I may not be affiliated with these sites but I own and run plenty of other sites under other venues to understand what the frustration and goal is. Make a palatable site and the traffic will come, make one that isn't so pleasing, good luck. -- Gryphon 13:08, 10 October 2006 (EDT)
I'd have to slightly disagree with you on wowhead.com, yes, it's clean and nice and i understand why it's popular, but speed has definitely taken a dive. I wont tout my own site here, because i'm sure traffic and popularity (hopefully :) will crush that aswell. We're seeing approx. 1500 users daily and it's still very fast. I'm sure sites like thott, khaz and wowhead are 20k visitors daily, probably more. --Brunis 15:05, 30 January 2007 (EST)
Sorry to say, but Thott and Alla get a hell of a lot more than 20k visits a day. Think towards the upper end of a million. User:Kirkburn/Sig 17:35, 30 January 2007 (EST)
I guess i was aiming a bit low.. but a million ? somehow i doubt it. Since they're all here, maybe they could put some numbers up? :D --Brunis 13:55, 31 January 2007 (EST)
They get plenty more than 20k, Thottbot alone runs on many++ servers to handle the load. It is highly doubtful any will report their usage, a lot of people like to hold those cards close. Your site is nice, hope it does well. GRYPHONtc 16:18, 31 January 2007 (EST)

New WoW resource

Hello Wowwiki editors,

I've created a World of Warcraft resource along the lines of Thottbot and would like it listed here.

The 'edit page' button advised me to open a discussion about it first, so that's why i'm here :)

The website is found at wowpeek.com

I'm not sure if you have to like it to be listed or what the criterias are ?

--Brunis 14:44, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Messed up listing

Accidently reordered the listing of fan site when I was trying to add blizzplanet.com - I didnt realize they were organized by Alexa and just reordered them alpha-order. My apologies - I will try to figure out how Alexa ordering works and repair it.

Abusers

I just came to update the link of my site, taking out the www, and noticed that someone had edited it changing the link from .com to .net. Is there any way to avoid people from abusing other sites like this?

I'm not really sure who did it :(

--Gahlok 17:32, 27 March 2007 (EDT)

A new german fanpage

May inwow.de be added here as it is one of germany's largest fanpages and home of the two largest fan-audio-plays (in german and perhabs english if there's enough feedback from the english speaking community)...--Maibe 12:38, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

new site - what category?

i'm not sure this is important enough to get its own conversation topic but oh well here goes - The Murloc is Lonely should be on here, it's the wow fanfic novel this guy's been working on for two years now. updates weekly. what category should it go in, though? technically speaking print is a kind of media, so i'm sticking it under media for now. it could be more like a comic that just uses words though, in that it's an ongoing story kinda thing
