Better than the  [Mallet of the Tides]?

Just had this question posed on the forums and after initially discarding the idea since I had initially scorned this weapon, I found it to be a slightly attractive choice as an avoidance weapon.

[Mallet of the Tides]
96.8 dps
34 Stamina
Defense Rating by 16 = 6.76 defense
Expertise Rating by = 3.55 expertise

[Cleaver of the Unforgiving]
98.4 dps
31 Stamina
Yellow socket (+8 Defense) - bonus = 3 stamina
Parry rating by 20 = .85% parry
Hit rating by 12 = .76% hit

Given that the 6.75 defense on the Mallet will produce a defense skill increase of either 6 or 7 (Defense Skill is an integer) this can result in an increase to Chance to Miss, Dodge, and Parry by either .24% or .28%. For this discussion we'll assume maximum benefit.

Assuming maximum benefit of 7 defense, the Mallet presents a total avoidance increase of .84% (Miss/Dodge/Parry).

Because the purpose of this comparison is to suggest using the Cleaver as an avoidance choice over the Mallet, assume the use of a +8 Defense  [Thick Dawnstone]. This provides 3.38 Defense Skill, resulting in either a 3 or 4 point increase in Defense Skill - .12 or .16% respectively. Assume worst case for the Cleaver and attribute a 3 point increase in Defense Skill.

This would result in the Cleaver providing: .12% chance to be missed, .12% dodge, .97% chance to parry, or a cumulative 1.21% Avoidance.

Comparing best case scenario Mallet (.84%) with worst case scenario Cleaver (1.21%) the Cleaver becomes an attractive choice as an avoidance weapon.

Additionally, as avoidance values go, Parry is more attractive than being missed or dodging as this increases your swing speed and results in more rage and threat, the parry values (.28% Mallet, .97% Cleaver) lean in the Cleaver's favor.

The Mallet will be superior for threat generation due to the expertise, but with the hit present on the Cleaver that benefit will only be 1/2 to 1/3 an increase over the Cleaver (3 or 4 expertise, depending on other expertise ratings present). The threat generation difference between the two will be even smaller considering the effect that a greater parry rating will have on the Cleaver's threat generation.

Considering that the Stamina would be the same and the Cleaver has a faster swing timer and more overall DPS, the Cleaver of the Unforgiving is an attractive alternative to the Mallet for 10 man tanks, and would be a reasonable addition to the 25 man tank's arsenal as an avoidance weapon. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kochira (talk · contr).

Those are 2 different weapons designed for different jobs. They cannot really be compared like that.   Zurr  TC 17:30, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Seems like they're very comparable like that. It's just a matter of looking at the numbers. User:Kochira/Sig 17:31, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
