For the ease of navigation on the main page,
We have a section with links to the new instances.
We have a section with links to the new zones.
We have a section with links to to Class pages.
Can we code up a section with links to Profession pages, Possibly in the Class and World Info pane?

Perhaps a picture or 2 could be added, as it is the frontpage doesn't look particularly 'friendly' its just like a wall of text and links. Stewart (t) 01:57, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

I am impressed with the lack of response to this thread. Ariule (talk) 14:22, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

I would make the right column thinner and thus put another column in Welcome to the Cataclysm information center block. (Also changing it to be non-cata specific.) This would enable all races, class and professions to be linked from this area. Stega (talk) 20:22, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

If you're suggesting non-trivial changes to the main page, the easiest way to get those implemented is to create a sandbox version of the main page (perhaps along the lines of Portal:Main/Dev) which would reflect how you want things to look; we can then consider the change and, should it turn out to be an improvement, deploy it on the main page much more easily than we could process a "you should do something like X" suggestion.
Currently, the main page is still in full-on Cataclysm mode; at some point, we'll probably want to revert it to the older design, which is perhaps a bit less of a link farm for "new" content. Images are a double-edged sword: they do take up quite a bit of space for comparatively little navigation benefit. We certainly wouldn't want to plaster random images for the sake of visual appeal; but perhaps an illustration as part of the Featured Article box can serve as a relevant and interesting visual element.
It's unlikely that the column layout can be changed significantly: the current solution renders fairly decently in narrow (~900px) browser windows; there really isn't any width we could shave off the right column without destroying its readability in those situations. Things are, of course, different when you view the main page in a full-widescreen view -- but I don't currently see a good way to cater to both these "extremes" at the same time. — foxlit (talk) 00:56, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

I was thinking simply of the addition something like this, similar to the "World and Class Info" section in the lower left corner of the main page. Just to break up the "wall of text" that we have going and to add an easy link to the professions.

Professions
Trade alchemy.pngAlchemy
Trade blacksmithing.pngBlacksmithing
Inv misc food 15.pngCooking
Trade Engineering.pngEngineering
Trade engraving.pngEnchanting
Inv inscription tradeskill01.pngInscription
Inv misc gem 02.pngJewelcrafting
Inv misc armorkit 17.pngLeatherworking
Trade Tailoring.pngTailoring

On some level, I'm mildly concerned about the quality of content on the linked pages -- but perhaps that's not that far off the general level of out-datedness of, say, class articles. It'd be nice if we went through those and cleaned up the profession pages, but that perhaps requires a bit too much effort. I'll make the change to the front page in a couple of days. — foxlit (talk) 21:22, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Images look great, a nice visual breakup of the text we have going. My thanks. Ariule (talk) 19:11, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
