Following a discussion with Lon-ami on Talk:The Gathering, we felt that the copyright policy of WoWWiki could need some work. The way I view it now, both Lon-ami and myself were right in the discussion. More accurately, neither of us were wrong. I simply cited what the policy of WoWWiki was and suggested to act accordingly. Lon-ami suggested we'd just do what is common practice on the wiki. In this case, this clashed. In my opinion, general practice and policy should go hand in hand, otherwise authority becomes meaningless. This leaves me to my suggestion: we either need to loosen up our copyright policy or get our act together and start being stricter towards copyright violations. Once again, please read the talk page I linked up here for an example which proves that the current state of affairs is unacceptable. Yeah, Amberrock is right. We need some decision here. The discussion originated with the decision of remove or not the official description of the comic The Gathering, provided by Wildstorm.--Lon-ami (talk) 14:44, September 28, 2009 (UTC)
I don't want to address the issue completely right now, but most Blizzard content is copyrighted, but they give permission to use most of their work for informational purposes. So, please don't mix up treatment of Blizzard content with how other content is treated. As for Wildstorm stuff, unless you can find some similar usage permission, we shouldn't have direct quotes. Much of the controversy here seems to be due to not wanting to send a message to DC/Wildstorm and ask permission. Try that first, before getting so excited. Likely they won't respond, but you can at least ask. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:35 PM PST 28 Sep 2009
Well, my point is that a lot of webs, like Blizzplanet, use that content 100% like it appears at the Wildstorm site. Guess they have permission, nope?--Lon-ami (talk) 18:44, September 28, 2009 (UTC)
Blizzplanet is very conscientious about getting permission and has very close ties to Blizzard (hence the many interviews and previews they get). --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:00 PM PST 28 Sep 2009
Asking is good. So it documenting permission. It is important to know what will and will not get WoWWiki into trouble. Who is asking Wildstorm and Blizzard?--SWM2448 20:41, September 28, 2009 (UTC)
Someone with real authority here at WoWWiki should do it.--Lon-ami (talk) 11:07, September 29, 2009 (UTC)
From what I can tell, the only person with any authority here is Kirkburn. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:45 PM PST 29 Sep 2009
Being the instigator of this thread, I thought I'd keep the ball rolling: Kirkburn has been contacted.IconSmall BloodElf Male.gifAMBER(RΘCK) 21:05, October 4, 2009 (UTC)
