In The Art of Blizzard Entertainment, it has the following commentary:

Samwise: This is still one of the images I remember seeing and thinking: "Hell yeah. We're gonna be unleashing this soon on the world."

Nick: Bill and I looked at painting very differently, and Bill just came with these big broad colors and warm tones. In this image the colors themselves transport you. I remember the buildup to Warcraft and those images dropping on the website as teasers, and at first I thought maybe this was StarCraft related. And it was all of it. WoW was everything.

Chris M.: I remember that series of images, and they began to turn a corner from looking at the Warcraft franchise, looking at the world in terms of characters and soldiers and army kits—looking at the world largely from the top down—and really being forced to look at it in terms of, "No, it's a sprawling thing out in front of you." It's mountains, it's shores, it's vast landscapes. Sam had certainly painted a number of those, but I think collectively we hadn't really made that mental turn. Every square inch of this world—
