Zul'jarra is a forest troll located in Zul'Aman. She is one of the main protagonists and quest givers in the Zul'Aman storyline. Zul'jarra is the current chieftain of the Amani trolls and the granddaughter of Zul'jin. Her brother Zul'jan acts as her adviser.[1]

History

Zul'jarra was born to Man'ye and Zarama as their eldest, later having a younger brother named Zul'jan. Her grandfather was the infamous Amani warlord, Zul'jin, who aligned his people with the Old Horde against their ancient foes, the high elves of Quel'Thalas. Her uncle, Kinduru, was loa-speaker for Akil'zon, the loa of the Amani.[2]

Zul'jarra was raised in her childhood by her parents. She remembered her father as a big man with a big heart, with booming laughter that filled their home. He would often be teased by his brother, Kinduru, for being the softer one in his relationship, something that never stopped Man'ye from doting on his children. While Zarama represented the iron will of the chieftain, Man'ye embodied love. He and Zarama both prepared their children for the trials and realities to come for them later in life. Man'ye focused on instilling a great deal of respect for the past in his children, including dreams of reclaiming their people's greatness. He taught his children not to go to bed angry to avoid hatred settling in them.

As they grew up, Zul'jarra remained close with her brother, though they were at times at odds over their different views on the Amani.[3]

Gods of Zul'Aman

Burning Crusade This section concerns content related to The Burning Crusade.

Around the time of the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, as the Amani were preparing to attack Quel'Thalas, Hex Lord Malacrass stole and sealed Akil'zon's essence into one of the Amani's most talented shaman:[4] Man'ye. He was blessed by his brother, Loa Speaker Kinduru, alongside his father, before setting off for Atal'Aman, where Malacrass would perform his dark ritual.[5][2] Zul'jarra was a young child during this period.[6]

This avatar of Akil'zon fought and was defeated by champions of the Horde who raided Atal'Aman to preemptively stop the Amani. The loa's spirit, which had been chained and was being held by the Amani leader, Warlord Zul'jin, was freed when he was killed.[7]

After the death of her father and grandfather, the title of chieftain was supposed to be handed to her, but as she was too young, a succession crisis erupted.

Legacy of the Amani

Man'ye and Zul'jin's death left a hole in the leadership of the Amani, with the bulk of the tribe initially unaware of what had transpired within Atal'Aman. With Zul'jarra, his heir, too young to lead, his wife Zarama stepped up to take his place. Despite this, during the turmoil that was beget by Zul'jin's death, many brash pretenders spurred on by their egos or foreign powers tried to usurp the true heir. These usurpers, Daakara and Kazra'jin, were backed by Zul and the Zandalari Empire. Their deaths eventually led to Zarama being the lone leader of the tribe until her eventual death as well.[2]

As Zul'jarra grew, she took on a lover by the name of Ral'ji.[3] She supported and comforted Zul'jarra as adversity came her way.

Zarama ruled the Amani with strength for decades, though after an ambush by the Gnarldin, she was left horrifically wounded. Unable to defend her position in battle as chieftain, she and her brother-in-law, Kinduru, made moves to appoint Zul'jarra to her rightful place as chieftain. Though her son, Zul'jan, protested that his sister may not be ready for such a role, Zarama rebuffed him. Having been maimed and burnt in the assault by the Gnarldin, Zarama would not be able to withstand a martial challenge by one of the other tribal chieftains, meaning they could usurp control of the forest tribes from the Amani. Zarama's fears were proven right, as Kol'anji, chieftain of the Vilebranch tribe, proceeded to challenge Zul'jarra for leadership. Stating that the ruling family had led their people to ruin, Zarama and Zul'jarra rebuffed the rival chieftain but accepted his challenge.

While Zul'jarra prepared for the battle, Zarama feared her daughter would not be able to beat him. Spurred on by Kinduru, Zul'jarra was sent to the mountains to seek out the shrine of Akil'zon at Akil'zon's Reach. There, she would find an axe blessed by the eagle loa long ago, a weapon that could aid in her fight against Kol'anji. She was warned that the trip would be perilous, but with the future of her people at stake, and eager to prove herself, Zul'jarra departed for the mountain. Despite going alone, Zul'jan followed his sister, seeking to aid her in her quest up the mountain. The two shared fond memories of their father and parents before arguing about the challenge ahead. Despite this, Zul'jarra persisted and claimed the axe of Akil'zon, though she was ambushed soon after by gnarldin. Zul'jan and Zul'jarra fought them off, though Zul'jarra was knocked unconscious.

When she awoke, the challenge had already begun. Racing to aid her mother, Zul'jarra arrived just in time to find Kol'anji and Zarama in battle. Shortly after her arrival, however, the injured Zarama was struck down and killed. Zul'jarra would shortly avenge her and slay Kol'anji, putting to rest the first challenge made to her rule. Though Zarama was killed, Zul'jarra resolved to rule with the same strength she had. Rather than continue to use the axe blessed by Akil'zon, Zul'jarra took up Zarama's axe, using it as her weapon of choice to honor her mother.[3]

Midnight

Midnight This section concerns content related to Midnight.

During the events of Midnight, when Xal'atath began assaulting the Sunwell, the Twilight's Blade assaulted Zul'aman. An uneasy alliance was made between Lady Liadrin and Zul'jarra, as the Void were enemies of them both.[8] This was opposed by her brother, Zul'jan, who had already been making incursions into Eversong Woods to claim lightwood to make weapons that were useful against the Blade.[9][10]

Though wary of allowing outsiders into her people's land, Zul'jarra accepted that the Amani had no other allies they could turn to. The forces of the Amani fought alongside these outsiders to clear the Twilight's Blade from Atal'Aman, rescue the various elders of the forest tribes[11], and evacuate the civilians from the city.[12] Arming her people with lightwood weaponry, her brother explained that the Amani had delved into Eversong as the lightwood was one of the few things that could break through the void defenses of the Blade.[13] Despite this, Atal'aman was still lost as the amani evacuated toward Amani'Zar Village. Though Zul'jarra rallied her people to fight them, many of the other forest tribes were dealing with their own concerns. The Shadowpine had been divided since the loss of their loa, Jan'alai, the Vilebranch had become traitors after Kol'anji's death, the Witherbark were being abducted by the Vilebranch, and the Twilight's Blade had destroyed much of the Revantusk's home. With nowhere else to turn, Zul'jarra took her uncle up on his offer -- to beseech aid from the Loa that had abandoned them.[14][15]

Zul'jarra in Amani'Zar Village after becoming the hash'ey.

Believing his niece held the potential to become the next "hash'ey" -- a leader blessed by the loa themselves -- Liadrin and the adventurer aided Zul'jarra in her quest. Dubbed as her "hash'ura", champions, they were tasked with aiding Zul'jarra in not only securing the blessings of the Loa, but returning them to their people.[16] The group began their quest by heading up the mountains to seek Akil'zon, collecting various trophies as an offering while also adhering to the rites needed to rise to her temple. After being posed with a trial by the mighty loa, Zul'jarra was granted her blessing, and Akil'zon at last returned to the Amani.[17][18][19][20][21]

Amani-zar after the Zul'aman Campaign (triggered by talking to Zul'jan)
Zul'jarra says: Ah, so de hash'ura did find you, my brother. Why did you miss de party? I know you like to dance!
Zul'jan says: Forgive me, sister. I do not feel like celebrating.
Zul'jarra says: Why, Zul'jan? Are you not happy for our victory? For de loa returnin'? For your sister becomin' hash'ey?
Zul'jan says: I am glad we crushed de Twilight's Blade. And I am glad that you are happy.
Zul'jarra says: You do not like that the loa are back. Why, Zul'jan? They have been part of our culture since de beginnin'.
Zul'jan says: Let me ask you, sister. Do you submit to de loa, or do the loa submit to you?
Zul'jarra says: It is neither! Can you not understand dat our relationship with de loa is built on trust, not power?
Zul'jan says: Yes, but what if we become dependent on them again and they disappear? When they left, it shattered us.
Zul'jarra says: Dey left 'cause we almost killed dem--our grandfather and dat villain Malacrass.
Zul'jarra says: I don't mean to yell at you. I understand where you comin' from. Our image of our grandfather is hard to let go.
Zul'jarra says: And to let go of being on our own. But we gotta work with de loa. And de gokinye.
Zul'jan's eyes narrow.
Zul'jarra says: It won't be like it was, Jan. But I won't let you wilt in my shadow. You will still be my right hand. And my brother.
Zul'jan says: I... thank you, sister. I hope you are right.
Amani-Zar Village after the Zul'aman Campaign (triggered by talking to Lady Liadrin)
Lady Liadrin says: Your brother has disobeyed your orders more than once. I know he is family, but should he not bear some consequences?
Zul'jarra sighs deeply.
Zul'jarra says: He has been ignorin' his big sister since de day he was born.
Zul'jarra says: Zul'jan also be de grandchild of Zul'jin, and so he has power. And he talks well. He has followers.
Zul'jarra says: Most of dem are dead because of Mor'duun. De rest? I don't want to splinter de tribe again by punishin' my brother.
Zul'jarra says: Losin' his followers and seein' me become hash'ey... I think dat may be punishment enough.
Lady Liadrin says: Your brother would begrudge your relationship with the loa?
Zul'jarra says: We are brother and sister. We "begrudge" everything. But we also leave it behind.
Zul'jarra says: De way he is. It is also my fault. I should not have been so hard on him--now and as a child.
Lady Liadrin says: He is his own man. And smart enough to know and face the consequences of his actions.
Zul'jarra says: You want me to take his head or what? Dat's de kind of justice we have in Zul'Aman.
Zul'jarra says: I know my brother. And I am goin' to give him a chance to make things right. He deserves dat from me.
