Zul'jan is a forest troll of Zul'Aman. He is the grandson of Zul'jin and the adviser to his sister Zul'jarra, chieftain of the Amani trolls.[1]

Zul'jan is one of the main protagonists and quest givers in the Zul'Aman storyline.

Unlike his sister Zul'jarra, he is not a warrior, preferring to talk his way through problems. He distrusts the loa because, regardless of the actions of Zul'jin, they still abandoned his people and his family. He worries that prioritizing the loa without focusing on the strength of the Amani will lead to their people being shattered again. He thought with the lightwood that they would be able to take back their ancestral lands after defeating the Twilight's Blade.[2]

Zul'jarra knows that her little brother is always in her shadow, not plotting a betrayal or planning his own rise, but genuinely there to look after her, as he knows she would always look after him.[3]

History

The second-born child of Man'ye and Zarama, Zul'jan and his older sister Zul'jarra were doted upon by their father. His grandfather was the infamous Amani warlord Zul'jin, who aligned his people with the Old Horde against their ancient foes, the high elves of Quel'Thalas. His uncle, Kinduru, served as a loa speaker for Akil'zon, the loa of the Amani.[4]

Zul'jan and Zul'jarra were prepared by their parents for the trials and realities that awaited them later in life. While Zarama represented iron will, Man'ye embodied compassion and focused on instilling deep respect for the past in his children, along with dreams of reclaiming their people's greatness. He also taught them never to go to bed angry, lest hatred take root. As they grew older, the siblings remained close, though they sometimes clashed over their differing views on the Amani.[5]

Zul'jan was still a young child[6] during the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP. As the Amani prepared to attack Quel'Thalas, Hex Lord Malacrass, with Zul'jin's approval, stole and sealed Akil'zon's essence within Man'ye.[7] Zul'jan's father and grandfather were later killed by champions of the Horde who raided Atal'Aman to preemptively stop the Amani.[8]

Legacy of the Amani

The deaths of Man'ye and Zul'jin left a void in Amani leadership, with most of the tribe initially unaware of what had transpired within Atal'Aman. With Zul'jarra—Zul'jan's elder sister and heir—too young to lead, their mother Zarama stepped into the role. During the turmoil following Zul'jin's death, several brash pretenders, driven by ego or foreign backing, attempted to usurp the rightful heir. Among them were Daakara and later Kazra'jin, who were supported by Zul and the Zandalari Empire. Their deaths eventually left Zarama as the tribe's sole leader.[4]

Zarama ruled the Amani with strength for many years, but after a gnarldin ambush she was left horrifically wounded. Unable to defend her position in battle, she and Kinduru moved to appoint Zul'jarra as chieftain. Though Zul'jan protested that his sister might not be ready, Zarama rebuffed him. Maimed and burned in the assault, she could not withstand a formal martial challenge from rival tribal leaders, risking the loss of Amani control over the forest tribes. Her fears proved correct when Kol'anji, chieftain of the Vilebranch tribe, challenged Zul'jarra for leadership. Though they rejected his claims that the ruling family had failed their people, Zarama and Zul'jarra accepted the challenge.

Spurred on by Kinduru, Zul'jarra journeyed to the mountains to seek the shrine of Akil'zon at Akil'zon's Reach, where she hoped to find an axe blessed by the eagle loa. Zul'jan followed, determined to aid her ascent. The siblings shared fond memories of their parents but also argued about the coming trial. After Zul'jarra claimed the blessed axe, she was ambushed by gnarldin. The siblings fought them off, though Zul'jarra was knocked unconscious. While she slept, Zul'jan witnessed the challenge between Zarama and Kol'anji. Soon after Zul'jarra's return, the injured Zarama was struck down and killed. Zul'jarra avenged her mother by slaying Kol'anji, securing her rule. Zul'jan loyally accepted his sister's ascension to chieftainship.[9]

Midnight

When Xal'atath assaulted the Sunwell, the Twilight's Blade attacked Zul'Aman. In response, Zul'jan led his followers into Eversong Woods to retake Tor'Watha and harvest Lightbloom trees as weapons against the Blade. During this effort, a fallen tree triggered a surge of Lightbloom that spread into nearby Suncrown Village.[10] After the blood elves discovered their presence and attacked Tor'Watha, Vanatha rushed to inform Zul'jan.[11]

Within the Watha'nan Crypts, Zul'jan was observed by Arator and an adventurer killing a cultist with a Lightbloom weapon. Realizing that Zul'jan sought a way to protect his people from the Twilight's Blade,[12] Arator attempted to convince him that they shared a common enemy. However, Zul'jan had already departed, and the pair were forced to kill Vanatha.[13]

At Zul'jan's command, the Amani invaded Quel'Thalas through the Amani Pass to secure another route for gathering Lightwood. As the battle neared its end, Zul'jan was confronted by Lor'themar Theron, Grand Magister Rommath, and High Exarch Turalyon.[14] After being defeated, Zul'jan taunted Turalyon's self-righteousness and spat upon the Light, prompting Turalyon to charge. Before the blow could land, Arator jumped in the way, shocking everyone present. Taking advantage of the moment, Zul'jan retreated into Zul'Aman.[15]

After the Amani surrendered, the blood elves demanded that Zul'jan relinquish the Lightwood and return to their lands. Even so, he lingered at the gates of Zul'Aman with his troops, forcing Lady Liadrin and her Blood Knights to hold the pass. While Liadrin attempted to resolve the situation diplomatically, tensions remained high.[16] Before conflict could erupt again, the Twilight's Blade and their master Mor'duun attacked both forces. With the timely arrival of Zul'jarra, the combined Amani and blood elven forces defeated the cult.[17] In the aftermath, Zul'jarra forged an uneasy alliance with Liadrin against the Twilight's Blade—an alliance Zul'jan opposed.[18]

Notes

  • Zul'jan is voiced by Yeukayi Ushe.[19]
  • The Art of World of Warcraft: Midnight section on Zul'jarra and Zul'jan frame them as "Divergent Rulers of the Amani" and that they are "competing leaders" which is not how their relationship is framed in-game. Zul'jan's concept art shows him with shadow magic on his left hand.[20]
  • Zul'jan's use of a purple scarf may be an homage to (or possibly the same scarf of) his grandfather Zul'jin.
