The focus is one of the most overlooked features in parties to help a character change targets effectively and direct character spells.

How to Set the Focus

  1. Right click on the desired Unit Frame.
  2. Choose "Set Focus" from the popup menu.
  3. Some addons will affect the ability to set the Focus. If a dialog box appears, simply click Ignore.
  4. Repeat the procedure. If it fails a second time, then the conflicting addon may need to be disabled.

Advantages

The Focus has a wide variety of benefits depending on how it and where it is used.

Hot Keys

The Focus has a dedicated hotkey within the standard World of Warcraft interface. This may be changed to meet the person's need. This means that even in situations where the Focus would not normally be attached to a keyboard key, it may still be accessed quickly with no ambiguity.

Recommended Setting for Keyboard Users:

Since Assist (target's target) is, by default, "F", it is recommended that Target Focus be set to "Shift+F". This makes for the quickest targeting no matter the circumstance. By pressing "Shift+F", the focus will be grabbed. By pressing "F" immediately after, their target will be set as your target, if they have one. If the new target is targeting your focus, then pressing "F" again will move straight back to them without the need for the Shift key.

Macros

There are a number of ways that the focus may be integrated into macros. Members of The Remnant are encouraged, though not required, to utilize the macros listed below

Extra Unit Frame

One of the most appealing benefits for heavy mouse users is that when you choose a focus, an additional unit frame is created. This provides another "click point" for the user. Additionally, the Focus unit frame may be moved to a more advantageous place. Moving the frame could either provide quick recognition, or even limit the movement required based on the way the user uses their mouse.

Advanced Uses

Threat Management

One of the most important factors for the game engine to determine aggro is how many party members and who is attacking a given monster. Ideally, dps classes should attack whatever the tank is attacking, as this target is the one whom the tank has built the most threat upon. By setting the tank as the focus, one can always ensure they are attacking the tank's target, either manually or by macro.

"Random" Healing

If a monster is given to attack different party members randomly, or if threat cannot be managed, the Healer may set the monster as the focus and heal whomever the monster is targeting. If this changes often, there is quick easy access to all of the monster's targets as they change.

Healing Insurance

If a Tank sets the Healer as the focus, then they can quickly target them when bad things occur to the Healer. They could taunt any of the monsters attacking them, or even come to their defense, or use their "self heals" on them.

Multi-purpose/Single target

Through the use of some specialized macros, classes that need to keep track of bot
