The Swamp of Sorrows is the first mission in the orc campaign of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. It is also the first mission in the game's demo.
Mission briefing
Blackhand has assigned you to an outpost in the Swamps of Sorrow. Your task is simple enough that even the War Chief feels that you are capable of it. Construct at least six farms, so that we may keep our troops well fed and ready to do battle. Only a fool would leave his treasures unguarded, so you must also build a barracks for the defense of these farms.
Objectives
Battle
A small garrison of orcs, under the command of Orgrim Doomhammer, were mining for gold and harvesting lumber in an area in the Swamps of Sorrow. These resources were being gathered to construct an outpost, as was commanded by Blackhand. During the construction process, the orcs were attacked by Footman and Archer patrols but managed to fend them off, after which they managed to finish constructing the outpost.
Guide
All you have to do to complete this mission is build five Farms (you already start with one) and a Barracks. Start by sending your Peons north, where a Gold Mine awaits him. Train a Peon, then have him build a Farm to expand your food supply. You should train several more Peons to speed up the process of harvesting. You will need to harvest lumber, so send one of your Peons to the south to do this.
Do not build any Roads; it is a waste of gold at this time and there is more than sufficient road to fit all the buildings you need to complete the mission objectives. Exploration is not necessary, but if you wish to, send a Grunt to roam around, but be careful as he will most likely encounter enemy units (It is not required to engage any enemy units to win). Fortunately, all units on the map will not attempt to approach your base unless you get close enough to provoke them.
If you run out of gold, there are three additional mines around the map, but they are protected by enemy forces (The one to the south is the least protected). Your Grunts will need to take them out first, before you can send your Peons to harvest the resources.
Once you have six Farms and a Barracks, the mission is completed.
The Easy Way
Do not explore and do not long-distance mine; the nearby resources are enough to complete the mission if you carefully manage them, Train two Peons and kill off one your Grunts. Put one Peon on the Gold Mine and the other two on the woods south of the base (No enemy units are anywhere near it, so your Peons are free and safe to chop away). Once you reach 3100 gold and 2000 lumber, you can stop harvesting and build your Barracks and five Farms. Resource gathering always takes a bit of time, but this is an easy enough introduction to the game.
