Merciless K'aresh of the Wastelands

When K'aresh emerged from the Great Dark Beyond, there was nothing but sand and wind. The air was rank and no seed found purchase within the soil. No creature scampered upon the sand, or took flight upon the wing. K'aresh was barren and alone. This was the beginning of K'aresh, and so it shall be his end. K'aresh has grown more generous, but Merciless K'aresh remains to test us, to remind us of what we can lose should we waste what he has given us. We must know how far it is possible to fall.

Untamed K'aresh of the Wilds

K'aresh was not happy with his isolation. He longed for the company of beasts, he desired the sight of green and blue upon the land, he wanted the diversity of sensation. So K'aresh brought forth the wilds--nature in all its abundance and danger. Beasts of fur, fin, and feathers. Plants that grow and creep and spread through fruit, seed, or bramble. The gift of life and freedom was the first and most precious of the gifts that K'aresh bestowed upon us.

Innovative K'aresh of the City

With the land, sky, and sea filled with the beasts and plants, K'aresh longed for more, so he created a creature that could make him more. More sounds, more smells, more sights, more of whatever K'aresh could imagine, and more of things K'aresh could not yet envision. So K'aresh created people. People to tame the Untamed, to cross the Merciless wastes, to sing, to paint, to make magic, to create the new. K'aresh created the first people and gave them nothing but the wastes, the wilds, and the song of innovation. The people were too merciful for the wastes, and too tame for the wilds, thus they created their own domain, the city. K'aresh was pleased with the first of the gifts he received.

Austere K'aresh of the Exchange

As the new people of K'aresh grew in power, they grew in number and destroyed the wastes and the wilds to build their cities. They threatened to overwhelm K'aresh's creation with their own. They fought, stole, took, lied, and consumed all they could. The greatest of K'aresh's creation threatened to become a devouring beast--to end K'aresh itself. K'aresh loved all his creations: the wilds, the wastes, and the innovative creatures of the city. To save them from their own power, he created his final gift: the Exchange--death, transformation, and oaths. K'aresh gifted the people with death, so their lives had purpose and rhythm in his song. He gifted them the magic of transformation, so through death they are not lost but instead changed and reborn. He gave people the oath, so that they may define their purpose--to share it boldly with others, and honor K'aresh with a life well and honestly lived.

Silent K'aresh of the End

All songs grow silent. So it will be with K'aresh. When the last city wall crumbles, when the beasts and plants of the wilds perish, when there is no more innovation or ideas of the people of K'aresh. Then there will be the final facet of beloved K'aresh. All will be silent--all will be at peace. But that is not today. Today we live. Today we struggle against the merciless wastes, the untamed wilds, the innovation that does not go our way, and we measure our deeds against the Exchange to see if we have honored K'aresh. One day, the song of K'aresh will be silenced, but today my soul is bolstered by the facets of his voice.
