History

The War Within This section concerns content related to The War Within.

The Quickwick tribe once lived in the Warrens until the Candle King rose to power and sent the Waxtails to rule the city, oppressing the innocent kobolds and bullying them into submission.[1][2] During this time, Skitter, the Quickwick leader, was captured and imprisoned in the Lost Mines. There she was discovered by Speaker Brinthe and the adventurers accompanying her. Recognizing their shared goal of overthrowing the tyrant, Brinthe and Skitter agreed to join forces.[3]

To reclaim the Lost Mines, Speaker Brinthe tasked the adventurers with slaying as many Flickerflame kobolds as possible,[4] while Skitter requested they take the valuable candles to weaken the Candle King’s image of strength.[5]

The mines were defended by Cogchewer and his Sparklit, who were rebuilding abandoned ironstriders left behind by the Machine Speakers for use in war. Skitter and Brinthe directed the adventurers to destroy the ironstriders and defeat Cogchewer, taking his keys to access Darkflame Cleft.[6][7]

With the keys secured, they attempted to infiltrate the Candle King’s base, only for him to appear at the entrance. He quickly thwarted the attack by unleashing a fire elemental, Wickbreaker, summoned by Sootsnout, who sealed the entrance with her magic.[8]

After this failure, Brinthe allowed Skitter to lead the next phase of their plan. Together, they returned to the Warrens, where Skitter instructed the adventurers to distribute pamphlets from a flying mount to inspire the kobolds.[9] She also asked them to fight the Waxtail, free Oppressed Kobolds from captivity,[10] and gather scrap materials to help build new homes.[11]

Meanwhile, Brinthe devised a way to disrupt the Waxtail’s candle production. She sent adventurers to hurl cinderbrew into the large vats of wax being prepared by the Waxtail.[12] Finally, Skitter ordered the defeat of Torchsnarl, the Waxtail leader.[13]

Although these efforts weakened the Candle King’s grip, Skitter believed her people still needed a powerful symbol of hope. The Candle Crown, a traditional emblem of kobold authority, lay hidden in the Candle King’s hoard within Darkflame Cleft. Skitter and the adventurers infiltrated the Cleft, fought through the king’s Candleclaw minions, defeated the High Wax-o-mancer Dripear the Waxy, and successfully retrieved the crown.[14]

After the victory, Skitter led the Quickwick to Gundargaz at Brinthe’s invitation, forging an alliance between the Machine Speakers and the kobolds known as the Assembly of the Deeps.[15] Adventurers assisted the Quickwick in settling into their new home.[16]

The Candle King was ultimately overthrown and fled to Darkflame Cleft, where he and his remaining followers were slain by a party of adventurers guided by Skitter.[17]

In later events, Skitter joined the Siren Isle expedition, where her kobolds assisted with excavations.[18]
