Abilities

Prior to Wrath of the Lich King, the abilities known by any pet were determined by the specific pet tamed by the hunter. Additionally, training points could be spent on additional abilities and ranks. Available active abilities varied between pet families, while passive abilities were available to all pets.

Training points were removed in Wrath of the Lich King, and were largely replaced with pet talents. Abilities were no longer determined by the specific mob the hunter tamed; instead, abilities were determined by their pet family. Each family had a few abilities shared with other families, and one ability unique to that family.

Talents

Starting in Wrath of the Lich King, each family belonged to one of three types and, prior to Mists of Pandaria, had access to that type's talent tree. Some talented abilities were only available to certain pet families.
