- This article is about the unreleased zone from Vanilla. For the continent added in The Burning Crusade, see Outland.
Outland was originally going to be a level 68-70 zone floating far to the west of Stranglethorn Vale, but which was never never finished or released. It was intended to be a part of the vanilla set of zones.[1] Themed after the Hellfire Peninsula region, this zone would have been entered through the Dark Portal and have contained a "Black Temple" raid. This original Hellfire Peninsula resembled the The Frozen Throne version a lot more, with more mushrooms, etc. This area was even used in some promotional screenshots.
Geography highlights
- The basis for the zone is a recolored copy of Tanaris.
- The Dark Portal, the same size as the one in Blasted Lands, is on a thorn-covered hill in the southeast.
- A ruined human keep area, with a unique ruined cathedral model and the leveled keep model used in Honor Hold.
- A scout tower with bits floating like Shatter Point.
- A ruined orc stronghold area.
- A smaller version of the Pools of Aggonar.
- A draenei village in the Lost One style.
- A yellow mushroom forest, with some of the assets being used for Shadowbreak Ravine.
- Another mushroom forest that was cut down.
- A spiral path up a mountain to a demonic shrine.
- The siege weapons and giant caltrops seen along the Path of Glory.
