Nameplates

Jump to navigation Jump to search
A group of hostile mobs with their nameplates and casting information.

Nameplates are floating frames anchored to units that display key information. They appear above players and NPCs, providing health, casting, and limited aura information. Nameplates allow players to monitor multiple units without relying solely on the target or focus frames.

Midnight will enhance the default nameplate system by improving how important combat information is surfaced without relying on addons. Nameplates can now display a wider range of relevant buffs and debuffs, highlight dangerous or encounter‑critical casts with more prominent visuals, and present crowd‑control effects more clearly in PvP. These changes aim to increase readability, support encounter mechanics, and provide more consistent access to essential information across all game modes.[1]

Types

A friendly player nameplate, displaying their class color.

Hostile nameplates

Displayed above hostile NPCs and players. They typically include:

  • Health bar
  • Cast bar and interruptibility indicator
  • Debuffs applied by the player
  • Threat coloring when the player is in a tank specialization

Friendly nameplates

Displayed above friendly NPCs and players.

Personal Resource Display

Personal Resource Display

A nameplate‑style element that appears below the player character on the HUD. It shows:

  • Health
  • Primary resource (mana, energy, rage, etc.)
  • Secondary resources (combo points, holy power, soul shards, etc.)
  • Absorb shields and incoming healing

This can be enabled separately in Options > Combat.

Customizing

Nameplates can be clicked to target units and support mouseover macros and click‑casting. Basic visibility, scale, and display options are available in the Options, while more extensive customization is provided through addons.

Options include:

  • Always Show Nameplates: Forces nameplates to remain visible regardless of combat status. (Can be toggled with the default keybind ^ Ctrl+v)
  • Larger Nameplates: Increases the size of nameplates for improved readability.
  • Enemy Unit Nameplate: Enables nameplates for hostile units, with sub-options for Minions and Minor units.
  • Friendly Player Nameplates: Enables nameplates for allied players, with optional display for Minions.
  • Flash on Aggro Loss: Causes nameplates to briefly flash when the player loses threat on a unit. This is useful for tanks.
  • Nameplate Motion Type: Determines how nameplates behave when units move, with options such as Stacking Nameplates or Overlapping Nameplates.
