The Lordaeron Navy (also known as the Lordaeron fleet)[1] was the maritime military force of the kingdom of Lordaeron until it was burned down by Prince Arthas Menethil in Northrend.
History
Second War
During the Second War in 5 ADP, the Alliance of Lordaeron's navy was put under the leadership of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore of Kul Tiras, for he had the most experience dealing with maritime matters.[2]
Third War
On the onset of the Third War in 20 ADP, the New Horde infiltrated Southshore during the night to steal its ships, so they could sail to Kalimdor.[3]
After the Culling of Stratholme, Prince Arthas Menethil gathered the 1st Legion at Menethil Harbor[4] and sail the entire[1] Lordaeron fleet for the frozen continent of Northrend, in order to vanquish the nathrezim Mal'Ganis, shatter the Undead Scourge and stop the plague of undeath forever.[5] The sailors obeyed without direct orders from their commanders, as they all loved their prince and didn't know about the culling.[1] Only a few of the members of the fleet knew the whole story of why they were in Northrend.[6]
They eventually made landfall on the shores of the Dragonblight, where they built their main encampment and began their campaign against the Scourge. However, a messenger from King Terenas Menethil II eventually recalled the expedition back to Lordaeron, and with no choice but to obey, Captain Luc Valonforth ordered the troops to cut through the forest to reach the beach.[7]
As much as the prince's loyalists wanted to stay by his side, disobeying the king's command would amount to treason, but Arthas was determined to stay until the demon was destroyed. To prevent their return, Arthas—accompanied by a reluctant Muradin Bronzebeard and members of the Dwarven Expedition—secretly hired local mercenaries to help them fight their way through the Scourge to burn the Lordaeronian ships. When the 1st Legion discovered the burned ships, Arthas blamed the act on the mercenaries and had his soldiers kill them.[7][8][9] None of the soldiers knew that their prince was responsible for it, and they had now no choice but to remain in Northrend, at least until they could construct more vessels.[10]
Aftermath
Following the Plaguelands civil war in 22 ADP, the Forsaken began to build their own navy, using Lordaeron's battleships dredged up from the bottom of the Great Sea.[11]
After Arthas' betrayal, Forgotten Shore became a barren shoreline perpetually shrouded with mist, choked with the disintegrating wrecks of Lordaeronian ships and haunted by the 1st Legion ghosts.[12] On the other hand, Valgarde became the first home of the lucky few survivors stranded on the continent, which started as a small settlement with a decent anchorage in Daggercap Bay.[13]
Trivia
- During the Second War, the Alliance navy was known as the "Lordaeron Fleet", with Daelin Proudmoore leading it as the Grand Admiral of the Lordaeron Fleet.[14]
- Daggercap Bay was originally the place where the Lordaeron Navy made landfall in Warcraft III[15] and in Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.[6] It was later retconned to have been in the Dragonblight at the Forgotten Shore. Chronicle later stated that Arthas made landfall in the Howling Fjord.[10] Then again later in Exploring Azeroth, Arthas' landing place was in the Forgotten Shore in the Dragonblight.[9]
