K'aresh (/kɑːˈɹɛʃ/ kah-RESH) is the original homeworld of the ethereals and brokers. It was an arid planet, home to a thriving ecosystem and several sentient species[1] until it was destroyed in the Devouring War,[2] forcing the K'areshi into exodus across the Twisting Nether, the Shadowlands, and on shattered remnants surrounding the planet's husk. Most K'areshi believed Dimensius the All-Devouring was responsible for their planet's destruction. In truth, the Ravel shattered the planet in an attempt to kill the void lord before he could consume K'aresh, knowing the planet was doomed either way.[3] Like Azeroth, K'aresh had a worldsoul, which was referred to in the masculine sense.[4][5] It had twin suns named Meter and Ti'meter that gave the sky a saffron blood-orange sky, which was consumed by Dimensius along with both suns.[6][7][8]
History
- Main article: K'areshi
Prior to Dimensius's arrival, the world of K'aresh was an arid planet, home to a thriving ecosystem and several sentient species,[1] including the K'areshi. Led by High Priest Salhadaar and the Council of Oracles, their society was composed of a variety of city-states throughout the desert world, such as Tazavesh which was ruled by Bilaal, Ma'nussa, ruled by Ky'veza, along with Gastalt, Dervashna, Tingarla, and Sufaad. There were also tribes of nomads that wandered the desert, stopping in cities to trade and put on shows.[9] The Oracles communed with K'aresh's worldsoul through a ritual called the Tabiqa that allowed them to reaffirm their oaths with him and hear his song.[10][11]
The Doom of K'aresh
Many thousands of years ago[12][13] (perhaps a hundred thousand or more[14]), Dimensius invaded K'aresh, beginning an apocalyptic conflict that the K'areshi would call the Devouring War. According to Locus-Walker, shortly before the invasion, his people began receiving a vision similar to the Radiant Song.[15] By the time the people realized that their world was warning them of the coming danger, it was already too late.[16] How Dimensius found K'aresh is still hotly debated among the surviving ethereals, but the effects of his coming were unmistakable: he opened countless gateways into the Void around the planet, bathing K'aresh in dark energies. The K'areshi hastily attempted to construct magical barriers around their cities, powered by the Reshii Ribbons which could convert all forms of energy, including the Void, into arcane.
Although the dark energies were blocked, the prolonged exposure of arcane energy from the shields tore away the K'areshi's corporeal shells and infused their souls with enough energy to transform them into energy beings. This altered state proved to be a blessing in disguise, however, as their enhanced minds and magical abilities allowed the ethereals to fight Dimensius and his limited forces to a standstill. Over the years, however, Dimensius eventually grew powerful enough to summon armies of fellow void creatures, forcing the K'areshi to flee into the Twisting Nether and Shadowlands, becoming ethereals and brokers.[1][17][9] Some ethereals continued to live on the shattered remains of the planet, becoming known as Wastelanders.
While many, including most of the ethereals and brokers, believe that K'aresh was destroyed by Dimensius, he did not actually succeed. Seeing that their home was going to be lost either way, the K'areshi Locus-Walker and Nari, along with Dimensius's own harbinger Xal'atath, made the decision to destroy the planet in order to kill Dimensius, preventing him from devouring K'aresh's worldsoul. It was the only way for the K'areshi to survive.[18] Fragments of Dimensius were scattered across the Great Dark Beyond, and the ethereals and brokers would believe that their planet's destruction was his fault.
Some ethereals still continued to live on the shattered remains of the planet, becoming known as Wastelanders. They were led by Soul-Scribe and sworn to Nexus-King Salhadaar.[19] During the final days of the Devouring War, a blue mineral began to surface and was called the Blood of K'aresh.[20]
The Burning Crusade
During the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, the Ethereum still kept a presence on the remains of K'aresh, maintaining a connection to Outland in Bash'ir Landing.[21] Some of the Void creatures who had served under Dimensius during the Devouring War were bound in service to the scattered ethereals, including Nexus-Prince Shaffar's independent faction operating in the Mana Tombs of Auchindoun.[22]
Cataclysm
Following the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, the mage Umbranse the Spiritspeaker opened several portals within Mazthoril, which were connected to a number of worlds across both the Great Dark Beyond and Twisting Nether, including K'aresh.[23] Hostile ethereals of unknown affiliation who still resided on the broken world used these portals to access Azeroth.[24] An adventurer was tasked by the blue dragon Haleh to seal these portals, closing off the connection between worlds.[25]
The War Within
- Main article: War on K'aresh
After her time in the Maw and Zereth Mortis, Ve'nari's vision of restoring K'aresh had become a prevailing idea among the brokers, gaining her enough influence to take over Cartel Om and enough fortune to outright purchase Tazavesh as a shipping port, making it a recreation center for Project Eco-Dome -- a revitalization effort led by Ve'nari to restore K'aresh with modified eco-domes purchased from and constructed by the Consortium.[26][27] With her newfound societal and financial power, Ve'nari founded the K'aresh Trust, reuniting ethereals and brokers for the first time in millenia through the union of various broker cartels, along with the ethereals of the Consortium and Protectorate, with the common purpose of revitalizing the remains of their common homeworld. While Tazavesh was moved back to K'aresh, Nexus-Prince Azir took the Dark Heart to Manaforge Omega, a colossal Shadowguard facility, and began the process to resurrect the void lord Dimensius, whose voice could be heard across the broken world.[28]
During the course of the war on K'aresh, Xal'atath entered into an uneasy alliance with the K'aresh Trust, and discovered that the Wastelanders' true desire was to hear the song of K'aresh's worldsoul once more, as they had once been the Oracles of the Worldsoul.[29] After they succeeded to hear K'aresh' song through a ritual, Soul-Scribe pledged her Wastelanders forces to the restoration of the world and surrendered her Reshii Ribbons to the adventurers.[30] The Trust forces stationed at Shan'dorah later led a counterattack on Shadow Point, where the Shadowguard forces outside Manaforge Omega were stationed, feeding energy from K'aresh itself into Dimensius within the Manaforge.[31][32]
After the heroes defeated the All-Devouring, they found a dimmed crystal, which Ve'nari quickly identified as the essence of K'aresh and that while diminished, it was not beyond saving.[33] After the adventurers defeated Soul-Scribe at Eco-Dome Al'dani, Ve'nari showed her the last fragment of the Worldsoul, before asking which oath she would follow. Choosing her oath to K'aresh over her oath to Nexus-King Salhadaar, Soul-Scribe allowed Ve'nari to unbind her with her own Tabiqa Dagger. Her untethered soul then stepped into the Worldsoul's light, giving her life and the last of her energy to heal it. The K'areshi remained in cursed bodies, and many still followed the Shadowguard into the Void of their own accord, but at least K'aresh itself would endure and live once more.[34]
The success of Project Eco-Dome would later pave the way for the return of flora and fauna to K'aresh. Having been aided by adventurers and experts from Azeroth and beyond; Ve'nari was able to establish a stable ecosystem within the Oasis eco-dome. Though it took much effort, the success of this project made it clear that, eventually, K'aresh could be restored anew.[35][36]
Getting there
In the second quest of the Ghosts of K'aresh campaign, players unlock a Spatial Rift portal to Tazavesh, the Veiled Market at [40.3, 22.8] in the Foundation Hall of Dornogal (near the portal to Stormwind and teleporter to the top of the building). The rift drops players off at [62.1, 92.9] at the south end of Tazavesh, just in front of the return portal back to Dornogal.
K'aresh has flight enabled from the outset, and flight is required to navigate the zone. In the third chapter of the campaign, players will acquire the
[Reshii Wraps] artifact cloak, which are required to access Phase Diving and the Manaforge Omega raid.

Notes and trivia
- K'aresh's solar system had two suns, Meter and Ti'meter. Both were consumed by the Void Lord Dimensius.[40]
- Before the two suns were named in The Doom of K'aresh, they were first mentioned in The Burning Crusade by the Protectorate Demolitionist.[41]
- Before the Void arrived, K'aresh's skies were described as saffron and blood-orange.[42] The Void's arrival turned the skies purple and dark.
- The demonym for K'aresh is K'areshi.[24]
- "Thank K'aresh!" is sometimes used as an interjection to express gratitude or relief.[43]
- Nexus-Princess Ky'veza's loot comes from a treasure chest called Spoils of K'aresh.
- In Hearthstone, as an arid planet, K'aresh was also home to creatures that became energy-camels.
