History
Eirich was one of the four wards uplifted by the Titans to maintain the Edicts and build the Coreway and its fortress, Dornogal.[1] He was the first High Speaker and leader of the Machine Speakers. It was by his directive that all Machine Speakers and workers carried out their duty of maintaining and expanding the many vaults and machines of Khaz Algar with strict adherence.[2] When the Awakening Machine broke, he retreated to the Ringing Deeps to repair it, leaving the Council of Dornogal. He was eventually fed up with Speaker Brinthe and exiled her to the surface under the pretense of representing him on the Council.[3][4] With his attention focused on the Awakening Machine, kobolds began to raid the Ringing Deeps and work sites fell into disarray.[5]
The War Within
After millennia of being unable to repair the machine,[5] Eiric secretly made a deal with Xal'atath. She would grant him the power to restart the machine, but it would awaken the earthen as Skardyn instead.[6] Brinthe returned to the Ringing Deeps with Moira Thaurissan, Dagran Thaurissan II, Magni Bronzebeard, and an adventurer to seek the aid of the High Speaker in their war against the harbinger. Eiric refused to listen to her plea but allowed them to wander the Ringing Deeps as long as they left when they were finished.[3]
With discontent growing, Eiric addressed his subjects in Gundargaz. He dismissed concerns about the nerubians and the worker shortage and assured them that he was investigating the disappearances in Taelloch, but dissuaded people from traveling there.[7] Dagran was suspicious about what was going on in Taelloch and went to investigate with Magni and the adventurer.[8] They discovered that the workers were transformed into Skardyn and that the foreman learned of Eiric's treachery, but was infected before she could warn anyone.[6] They warned Brinthe of the High Speaker's plan and gathered a force to stop him.[9] They wrested control of the Earthenworks from Eiric's followers and obtained one of his foreman's keys to the Hall of Awakening.[10][11]
Inside the hall, Dagran, Moira, Brinthe, Magni, and the adventurer fought their way through the High Speaker's forces and skardyn. They reached the final chamber and defeated the last of Eiric's guards, but were too late to stop him from corrupting the machine. Eiric taunted them before escaping through a void portal. With his grandson's encouragement, Magni channeled Azeroth's power and cleansed the machine, but seemingly at the cost of his life. As Moira and Dagran began to mourn him, Magni's stone skin started to crack and revealed him in his original dwarven form. Earthen soon began to awake, the first time in a millennia.[12] In the aftermath of Eiric's betrayal, the Machine Speakers elected Brinthe as their new High Speaker.[13]
Deposed as High Speaker, Eirich fled to the Stonevault and barricaded himself alongside his remaining loyalists. Dagran and a group of adventurers eventually found him transformed into a skardyn and ended the former High Speaker.
