The Gorian Empire[1][2] (also referred to as the Gorian ogre imperium[3] or simply the Ogre Empire[4][5]) was the nation-state of the ogres encompassing various holdings on alternate Draenor. One of the few empires in the world, it lost its former dominance after the rise of the Iron Horde, which forced Imperator Mar'gok to align himself with the orcs to ensure his empire's continued survival. He would have, however, turned himself against the orcs if the situation was favorable.[6] They are referred to as high ogres.[7][8]

Warlords of Draenor

Warlords of Draenor This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

In an alternate universe, with the rise of the Iron Horde, the Gorian Empire lost its dominance on Alternate Draenor. The last emperor, Imperator Mar'gok, reluctantly aligned the empire with the orcs to ensure its continued survival, although he would gladly turn against them if the situation was favorable.[6]

In Frostfire Ridge, the Bloodmaul clan made use of vast slave labor in order to extract ores and gemstones from the Bloodmaul Slag Mines, for the interests of the Gorian Empire.[9]

The Highmaul clan are known to value Artifact Fragments, the fragments of lost artifacts from the ancient ogre empire of Ashran, used as currency by the Alliance and Horde on the island.

During the excavation in Nagrand, Ko'ragh was the only ogre to survive direct exposure to a mysterious relic and was left with a near-complete immunity to all magic. Despite of this gift, he remained under the orders of the Sorcerer King.[10]

In Mar'gok's Overwatch, Gorian arcanists led by Grand Magister Reglakk were investigating ways to enchant weapons and armor to create and improve Felbreaker armor.. Infusing armor with Felbreaker magic allows immunity to all forms of magic, even fel magic.[11]

Ultimately, the Alliance and Horde launched an assault upon the capital of Highmaul in order to defeat the Gorian Empire once and for all. Amid the first assault, however, Cho'gall revealed his presence, as well as his intentions to overthrow the Sorcerer-King and destroy Highmaul. After much fighting, Highmaul's defenses were broken, and both factions confronted Imperator Mar'gok himself atop his citadel. Following a vicious battle, Mar'gok and Cho'gall were both eliminated. Much of the King's secrets, especially the Felbreaker knowledge, was subsequently taken following his death, to be used by Archmage Khadgar in his hunt for Gul'dan.

The death of Imperator Mar'gok, as well as the fall of Highmaul, marked the end of the empire's power in alternate Draenor.

Hut concept.
  • It would seem pet rocks were once a fad in Highmaul.[12]
  • While the written word is mostly used as an instrument for the upper echelons of imperial ogre society, occasionally an ordinary ogre will try his hand at making a story immortal.[13]
  • Imperial ogres jealously guard the secrets of magic in order to keep their status among the ruling class. The wealthiest among them adorn themselves with magically-enhanced jewelry and other wearable artifacts.[14]
  • Too idiotic to disobey orders, but big and dangerous enough to keep even unruly ogres in line, ogron serve as expendable muscle for ogre leaders from warlords all the way up to the emperor himself. Any champions seeking to overthrow ogres in power had best prepare to face down one or more ogron towering in their way.[15]
  • The empire had a Legion, but Imperator Mar'gok started pushing it aside in favor of the magic breakers.[16]

Notes

  • The Gorian Empire is based on the Roman Empire in its twilight years, when it was on its way to the collapse that would lead to the Middle Ages.[17]
  • High Centurion Tormmok was sent by Imperator Mar'gok in search of the "first ogre civilization", which implies there was one before the Empire. The Ruins of the First Bastion may have been part of it.
  • A cut naval mission was supposed to reveal that the Gorian Empire had a small but powerful navy, with its warships built out of stone.[18] It was later confirmed that the ogres were indeed a seafaring people.[19]

  • The Darkmaul ogres of Exile's Reach display many banners with the Gorian sigil. It is unknown if these ogres are actually Gorian, or if so, how they arrived on an island on Azeroth.
