So as many of you may know, there is a new Interactive Maps feature available from Fandom. I've talked about it before in Discord and most at least in there liked it so far. I've already created a map here sometime ago then made more changes to it once custom icons were made possible. Map:Timeless Isle which is essentially a copy of our current map, {{Timeless Isle vignettes}}. If you're not familiar with the Interactive Maps, feel free to read up on it here.

Currently, our maps uses a template called {{Zone Map}}:

  • (Pro) It is our own template that we could try and innovate on, improve and adapt it.
  • (Con) It is currently not friendly to mobile.
  • (Con) It doesn't provide any information such as a description and screenshot. There is only a tooltip with a name and coordinates. Additionally, this tooltip is easily accessible on desktop but mobile lacks this information and would have to rely on the table for the coords.

For the Interactive Maps,

  • (Pro) Already mobile friendly.
  • (Pro) It has a tooltip that provides a optional screenshot, name, description, coords, and links. This kind tooltip is easily accessible on mobile with a simple tap on the icon.
  • (Con) Restricted to whatever Fandom improves on it.

We'll discuss whether we want to adopt it, use it along side our current maps template, or leave it alone. I'll start a vote at a later time (if it is necessary). Right now, would like to hear everyone's thoughts on it. If you have any additional pros/cons you'd like to note, feel free below.

If we were to adopt this map feature, personally we're going to need a guideline on what kinds of maps makes sense to create and what is expected of them. Currently, creating a map does not add a category. Maps should be properly categorized, and so far Category:Interactive maps seems like the basic category needed for now. Having a map that marks every vendor, repair, etc. isn't exactly useful for most maps (cities may be another story). Instead we could create maps specific to:

  • Events like the Midsummer Bonfires: a map of Eastern Kingdoms, etc. that lists their locations which can help devise a good path through them (idea by Dark T Zeratul).
  • Rare mobs and treasures that shows the spawn locations throughout the zone.
  • Zereth Mortis chest locations.
  • Achievement locations like  [Secret Fish of Mechagon].

Can't wait to hear from you all. — SurafbrovWarcraft Wiki administrator T / C 04:05, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

Looks 1000 times better and also works well on mobile, so I'm in. -- MyMindWontQuiet (talk) 12:10, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
The interactive maps make sense to me going forward. Updating/inserting guidelines for the "how" might be useful (categorization, naming, etc.)... but do we really need to try and specify the content? I feel that Project:DNP is already sufficient and applies with common sense to maps. DDC (talk) 12:46, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
A guideline is just advice essentially, not a policy that is enforced. But you're right about the WP:DNP. — SurafbrovWarcraft Wiki administrator T / C 13:36, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
