“Each to your own conscience. But I tell you this: our war is everywhere. In every deed and breath. We must prepare the people of this world to stand together.
We must be their example to rally against evil. In service we will awaken them all to form the ultimate alliance against the dark.”
Exodar is a nation of draenei and a member state of the Alliance. Following the ill-fated landing of the Exodar, the dimensional ship they used to escape Outland, the draenei have worked feverishly to use its remains as their capital city on the Azuremyst Isles. Having suffered a long and arduous history of exile, the draenei are now resolved to give their lives in defense of the Light and Azeroth itself. In the wake of the Burning Legion's defeat on Argus, ending the Burning Crusade, Prophet Velen revealed his intention for the draenei to build a new city for themselves on Azeroth so that they would no longer be scattered exiles.[6]
History
- Main article: Draenei
The Burning Crusade
In Year 27 ADP, when the Exodar crashed on Azeroth, ending its course on the Azuremyst Isles, the casualties were high, but many of the draenei passengers survived.[7] As the survivors salvaged what they could of their ship, the Hand of Argus created two forward outposts across the isles, namely Azure Watch on Azuremyst Isle and Blood Watch on Bloodmyst Isle.[8] The elekks played a large role in helping the draenei establish themselves on their new home, as the strong draft animals bore building materials needed to build new settlements and set down trade routes.[9]
Inspired by heroic tales of the Alliance and its victories against the Burning Legion, the draenei sought out and pledged their loyalty to the courageous faction.[10] Prophet Velen had long foreseen the friendship the draenei would have with the noble Alliance, and his prophecy came to fruition when his people made the first contact with the residents of Odesyus' Landing.[11][12] Together, they uncovered a conspiracy to harm the Alliance and the draenei involving the blood elves, the Venture Company, and their traitorous agents Engineer "Spark" Overgrind[13][14] and the demon Sironas.[15]
After it was discovered that Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider's agents, known as the Sunfury, had been sent to murder the draenei,[16] enslave the naaru O'ros,[17] and steal the Exodar,[18] further investigations revealed that Sironas led the Sunhawks in abducting and torturing draenei until they willingly desired to become man'ari eredar.[15] After contemplating the direness of the situation, Velen ordered Vindicator Boros to end the threat once and for all.[19] The Hand of Argus spearheaded the campaign, and with the help of heroes, they destroyed the Sun Gates[20] and defeated Sironas.[21]
Upon learning of their victory against the Legion, many draenei assembled and congratulated the adventurer in Blood Watch, including Prophet Velen who urged them to let any Outland draenei know of their new home on Azeroth.[22]
From Stormwind City to Ironforge, messengers soon relayed stories of the draenei's arrival and the state of Outland; the Alliance eventually voted unanimously to welcome them into its ranks and give them shelter and protection.[7] Lady Jaina Proudmoore readily offered her help to their people,[23] while Anchorite Paetheus sent draenei adventurers to Auberdine, the closest Alliance settlement, to propose cooperation with the nation of Darnassus in the fight against their common foes.[24][25] They also sent Emissary Valustraa to Darnassus and Emissary Taluun to Stormwind City to maintain diplomatic ties with their new allies, directing their adventurers to support their allies in their troubled lands.[26][27]
Not long afterward, the draenei played a key role in urging the Alliance to invade Outland, where they could disrupt the Legion's nefarious activities. When the Dark Portal was reopened, Justinius the Harbinger and the Azuremyst Vindicators joined the Azerothian forces to repel the Burning Legion. When they entered Outland, Justinius led a blockade of Alliance and Horde soldiers to defend the Stair of Destiny in Hellfire Peninsula, preventing the demonic invaders from reaching Azeroth. The draenei eventually defeated their ancient enemy in both the invasion of Outland and Battle for Quel'Danas. The return to Outland offered many draenei a chance to reconnect with their brethren who had been left behind, and while some of them chose to rebuild their society in Outland, the majority of draenei remained on Azeroth, vowing to uphold their commitment to the Alliance.[10]
With the threat of the Headless Horseman looming, the draenei peacekeepers diligently formed a fire brigade to extinguish the fires caused by the mad knight.[28]
Wrath of the Lich King
During the Scourge Invasion in 27 ADP, the Church of the Holy Light created an artifact with the naaru's Light, which draenei adventurers delivered to Prophet Velen to destroy the necropolises.[29]
At the start of the war against the Lich King, a delegation led by Harbinger Vurenn was sent to Valiance Keep in order to coordinate the draenei involvement across Northrend. However, both Counselor Talbot and General Arlos were reluctant to accept the help; the counselor argued that their troops were not ready to fight alongside their more exotic allies, leading the general to make use of the delegation in an advisory role, preventing the arrival of draenei battalions.[30] Suspicious that all their efforts to collaborate had been blocked and delayed,[31] Vurenn and Vindicator Yaala conducted a secret investigation,[32] which eventually led the the Alliance heroes to defeat the Cult of the Damned agents who had infiltrated the keep.[33]
Other draenei eventually made their way to the frozen continent, such as Thoralius the Wise who revealed the origins of mankind in Howling Fjord,[34] Vindicator Maraad who traveled aboard the Skybreaker in Icecrown, and Legoso who worked as a senior demolitionist in the Winterspring battleground. Many also joined the ranks of the Argent Crusade to defeat the Lich King.[35]
As the Grand Champion of the Exodar, Colosos led a delegation of draenei representatives in the Argent Tournament, and later faced the heroes in the Trial of the Champion.
During the War Against the Nightmare, the draenei were also affected in their sleep by the Emerald Nightmare, and later joined the Dreamform army to fight the forces of Xavius in the Emerald Dream.[36]
Cataclysm
During the Elemental Unrest meeting in Stormwind City, Prophet Velen joined the Alliance leaders in Stormwind Keep, where he revealed that the recent earthquakes felt across the world were symptoms he had seen before on Draenor, and that if they weren't able to stop this, fleeing Azeroth may have become their best option.
When King Magni Bronzebeard was petrified in Old Ironforge, Velen sent Farseer Nobundo to represent their people at the dwarven king's memorial.[37]
Following the invasion of Gilneas, Velen represented his people at the Alliance meeting in Darnassus, where he had surprisingly not been invited. High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind explained that they had assumed the draenei as a whole had declared themselves neutral after defeating Kil'jaeden at the Sunwell Plateau. The prophet calmly dismissed the assumption and declared the draenei's allegiance to helping the Alliance, stating that they would remain on Azeroth for so long as they were needed.[38] During the Ashenvale war, draenei were among the reinforcements who stood ready to fight alongside the night elves against the Horde.[39] After the conflict, High Priestess Ishanah replaced Velen as the draenei representative, then voted to accept the kingdom of Gilneas into the Alliance.[40]
After the Shattering, the Hand of Argus convened to discuss in light of the Exodar's repair, and eventually concluded that the draenei should leave to rebuild their second home on Outland and assist the Lost Ones remaining behind. The Triumvirate of the Hand agreed, and it was decided that unless Velen ordered otherwise, within a week the Exodar would take flight for old Draenor. Meanwhile, tensions were raised by the presence of Alliance refugees from across the ocean, who had come to Azuremyst to seek Velen and the draenei's protection. However, violence broke out when the increasingly paranoid refugees began slurring the vindicators as "demons" and became belligerent. After having been granted a vision of an upcoming war between light and shadow, the prophet emerged to quell the unrest, and peace was restored. He then told his people to remain on Azeroth and go out into the world to heal its people of the Cataclysm, and in so doing make them strong for the future and prepare them to unite in the war to come.[5]
At some point, a number of draenei led by Ambassador Rualeth moved into the Hinterlands, while Anchorite Traska and the others settled with the Highvale high elves of Quel'Danil Lodge to train in the ways of the Light and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the region.[41] As part of the Forsaken offensive across the continent, the lodge came under attack. With the help of adventurers, the elves and the draenei settlers were able to repel the invaders.[42] The Highvale documents were also retrieved from the chaos by Alliance adventurers and safely delivered to Anchorite Traska.[43]
In Ashenvale, Vindicator Vedaar and the Hand of Argus destroyed the remaining forces of the Burning Legion across the Felfire Hill, Demon Fall Canyon and Demon Fall Ridge area.[44] The Alliance heroes then prevented a planned demonic attack against the draenei settlement of Forest Song by killing the dreadlords Diathorus and Gorgannon.[45] [46] Draenei Paladins could also be seen in the Stonetalon Mountains and were attacked by Horde adventurers sent by Overlord Krom'gar and General Grebo.[47][48]
In the Swamp of Sorrows, Anchorite Avuun had been working for years to find a way to cure the Broken's affliction,[49] certain there was a way to bring the Lost Ones back from the brink and find a way to cure the fel energies that have consumed them.[50] Despite sending word to the Exodar itself, Avuun had not found any aid so far,[51] until Velen himself came to perform an unction on Magtoor as he passed away.[52]
During the war against the Zandalari, Priestess Thaalia helped the Alliance adventurers to mind control Ohgan'aka,[53] using the young raptor to discover Jin'do's plans inside Zul'Gurub.[54]
Mists of Pandaria
Prior to the Attack on Theramore Isle in 30 ADP, Lady Jaina Proudmoore contacted Prophet Velen and the Alliance leaders, requesting military support against the Horde.[55] After the city was destroyed, Emissary Taluun represented his people during a meeting with King Varian Wrynn and several Alliance leaders and ambassadors, helping them to determine the best course of action in response to Warchief Garrosh Hellscream's blockade of Kalimdor. Draenei vessels were eventually part of the Alliance fleet sent to lay siege to Durotar, having fortunately been traveling elsewhere when the blockade had been enacted.[56] Aboard the Lion of the Waves, several draenei shaman helped the king's fleet to cross the Great Sea in record time, maintaining fair winds and calm seas.[57]
When the Alliance landed in the Krasarang Wilds, draenei were part of Operation: Shieldwall, including several mages, stormcallers, and vindicators who joined the assault against Domination Point.
At the Alliance summit in the Shrine of Seven Stars, Nobundo represented his people and argued against using the sha's power, agreeing with Tyrande Whisperwind's proposal to destroy them.[58]
Warlords of Draenor
At the start of the war in Draenor in 31 ADP, Vindicator Maraad convinced High King Varian Wrynn to sign the declaration of war on the Iron Horde,[59] then led the Alliance forces against the Ironmarch in the Blasted Lands, and later, on alternate Draenor itself.[60] In Lunarfall, Officer Torluun could be met as a recruiting officer in the garrison's town hall, allowing the recruitment of peacekeeper.
Legion
Prior to the Battle for Broken Shore in 32 ADP, Voraatios the Benedictive used Light-Infused Crystals from the Exodar to enhance the weapons of Alliance champions for the coming battle.[61] The draenei fought alongside the Alliance at the Battle for Broken Shore, sending Exodar Vindicators to bolster their efforts, but they were eventually repelled by the Legion's overwhelming forces.[62]
During the Legion Invasions, draenei priests, shaman, and warriors were seen among the defenders fighting the demons in several regions across Azeroth.
During the Battle for the Exodar, the draenei forces were initially overwhelmed by the sudden attack, leading many of the citizens to retreat in the Vault of Lights, where they remained under the holy shield created by Velen and the Light's Chosen to hold back the invaders.[63] With the support of Archmage Khadgar's champions, the Exodar's defenders managed to cut off the Legion's reinforcements by destroying their fel portals,[64] while High General Rakeesh was defeated by the heroes after he had destroyed the naaru O'ros, the only being capable of deciphering the Light's Heart.[65]
After the Legion was repelled, Velen ordered Grand Artificer Romuul to prepare their vessel, declaring that they were going home.[63] The draenei later assembled a force of considerable magnitude outside their capital, with High Vindicators leading their vindicators in drills, artificers working on ballistae and arkonite defense crystals like those of Shadowmoon Valley, and Lightsworn Anchorites praying together in several rituals.[66] When the prophet issued a call to arms to the Armies of Legionfall to support their final counter-offensive, both the Alliance and Horde answered the call as well,[67] gathering their forces aboard the Vindicaar to regroup with the Army of the Light.[68][69] The draenei subsequently fought in the Argus Campaign, which ultimately ended the Burning Crusade.[70]
Battle for Azeroth
In the aftermath of the Argus Campaign, as High King Anduin Wrynn prepared his diplomatic tour of the Alliance nations, he asked Velen what the kingdom of Stormwind could offer to his people to show their deep appreciation for their aid against the Burning Legion. The prophet replied that the king's consideration about the draenei was enough, and that his presence in their capital city would soothe their spirits more than he could yet understand.[71] After Magni Bronzebeard revealed that Azeroth had been wounded by Sargeras, Prophet Velen enlightened his people about the state of the world, and King Anduin presumed that the draenei were probably hard at work already to help as they could.[72]
In Year 33 ADP, the draenei were finally reunited with the Lightforged draenei after the Army of the Light joined the Alliance.[73] However, their resources were largely depleted by their devastating war on Argus, and were unable to significantly aid their kaldorei allies during the War of the Thorns, although Velen attempted to assist their refugees in Stormwind City, and several brave individuals among their people volunteered to fight alongside the night elves. While High King Anduin Wrynn believed the Horde would eventually target the Azuremyst Isles, however, the Horde Army remained focused only on conquering Darnassus.[74] After the Burning of Teldrassil, some of the night elf survivors were evacuated to Azuremyst Isle,[75] under the protection of the draenei.
During the Battle for Lordaeron, the draenei sent their forces in support, including Auchenai ballistae, Exodar High Priests, and Exodar Peacekeepers to aid the Alliance army attacking Lordaeron Keep.[76] Several draenei peacekeepers later returned to Stormwind City when the Horde freed Princess Talanji,[77] while others served among the troop divisions sent for various missions throughout the Fourth War.
During the Battle for Stromgarde, Newstead provided Vindicator Banra ample room to train War Elekks, allowing Alliance heroes to use them in battle.[78]
After the Wizard's Sanctum was revamped in Stormwind City, Exodar Portal-Keepers moved there to maintain a portal to their capital on the Azuremyst Isles.
During the Battle at the Gates of Orgrimmar in 34 ADP, Exodar peacekeepers were seen among the Alliance forces sent to support Varok Saurfang's rebellion against Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner.[79]
After the armistice, when the Horde Council sent Zekhan and Rexxar to look over their holdings across Kalimdor, Velen extended them an invitation to the Azuremyst Isles, where they were assigned an escort consisting of Ya'rika and Kea'ton while visiting the Exodar and beyond.[80] Despite their efforts, the draenei couldn't clear away the toxic blight that had been spoiled over the isles.[81]
Dragonflight
In Year 40 ADP, Chieftain Hatuun called upon Velen to meet him on Argus, where he formally introduced the Prophet to the man'ari eredar Arzal'kal. After a tense first meeting, Arzal'kal was allowed to prove himself true when he and his allies secured the Brilliant Star, one of the Ata'mal crystal's shards, from a cult led by Speaker Nalridun. Upon receiving the shard, a grateful Velen made the decision to invite the Penitents to join with the draenei.[82] While man'ari adventurers eventually went to Azeroth, most Penitents stayed back on Argus as they didn't want to upset the draenei with their presence.[2]
After the war against the Primalists, Prophet Velen decided to hold an old eredar holiday, the Tishamaat, which had not been held since the days of Argus. While the Exodar was being prepared, it was discovered that the satyr on Bloodmyst Isle had been ambushing draenei traveling for the celebration; rather than mobilizing the vindicators and alarm his people, the prophet gathered Hatuun, Arzaal, and the draenei adventurer at his side to strop the threat.[2] When Hatuun questioned why the corruption was running rampant across Bloodmyst Isle, Velen admitted that he hadn't foreseen it and had pulled the Rangari out of the region in order to protect them.[83] After the group defeated Sironas and the satyrs, they Light-empowered an Arkonite Generator to cleanse hundreds of fel spreaders across the island.[84]
Back in the capital, draenei from all over were invited, but also Lightforged draenei, Broken, Lost Ones, the Krokul of Argus, and even the repentant man'ari led by Arzaal. At the celebration, Velen reflected that the eredar had lived shattered for too long and that it was time for them to be reunited in hope and faith,[85] then declared that their people must let go of the past in order to grasp their future. He further stated that they no longer needed to live scattered, that they would build a new city on the ashes of their exile, and declared that they would finally be home. The prophet then personally thanked the champion for helping their people reforge as one, declared them a paragon of their people, and finally rewarded them with a sacred vestment of precious materials from their homeworld.[6]
The War Within
During the war in Khaz Algar in 42 ADP, draenei reinforcements were part of the Alliance forces that traveled to Khaz Algar under the command of Lord Commander Turalyon.[86] Exodar Vigilants were later seen amongst the forces that arrived to aid the Arathi when the nerubians of Azj-Kahet launched an all-out assault on Hallowfall.[87]
Midnight
When Xal'atath and the Devouring Host invaded the Isle of Quel'Danas, many draenei paladins and priests were summoned by the Light to defend the Sunwell, fighting against the forces of the Void as part of the Vanguard of the Light.[88]
People and culture
- Main article: Draenei#Culture
The draenei society is centered around the Holy Light of Creation.[89] While sailing across the Great Dark Beyond aboard the Oshu'gun, the naaru taught them the ways of the Light, revealing that one day they would forge them into a Light-based coalition of all manner of races, the Army of the Light.[90] Deeply affected by the naaru's words, the draenei vowed to honor the Light and uphold their altruistic ideals.[91] Some also became shaman under the guidance of Farseer Nobundo, although for some draenei, the shamanistic teachings were considered as heretical and a blasphemy against the Light.[92][93]
The Artificers are the engineers of draenei society, tasked with building armor, weapons, and settlements.[94] They also serve as builders and architects, meticulously making sure draenei buildings are made sturdy and up to code.[95] The draenei crystalsmiths and artificers have learned to shape crystals for all kinds of purposes ranging from power containment to data storage.[96] The purple crystals that decorate their buildings, weapons, and armor are known as arkonite crystals, which contain a potent source of arcane energy,[94] and are used to power everyday draenei society.[97][98]
The peacekeepers are renowned warriors serving as guards in draenei society. They play a crucial role in protecting draenei settlements and maintaining order within their communities. In addition to their defensive duties, the peacekeepers act as a police force, investigating crimes, addressing suspicious activities, and administering justice according to the severity of the offense.[99]
Though the acquisition of wealth is no longer a driving force in their lives, the draenei understand that money makes the world go 'round, and have since set up an auction house in the Seat of the Naaru.[100]
Back on Argus, the eredar held a yearly sacrament known as the Tishamaat, a time to reflect on the burdens of the past, learn from them, and commit to a path forward. Due to the draenei's need to focus on fleeing from the Legion and surviving, it had not been celebrated in many years, until the prophet revived the tradition on Azeroth shortly after the war against the Primalists.[101]
Since their entry into the Alliance, the draenei of the Exodar have learned to celebrate the holidays shared by their allies, such as the Midsummer Fire Festival, Hallow's End, Feast of Winter Veil, and Lunar Festival.[102]
Political structure
Ever since their flight from Argus, around 13,000 years ago, the draenei have been led by the immortal Prophet Velen.[103] While the administrative matters were run by the Council of Exarchs on Draenor, it seems to have become obselete since the genocide of the draenei, with numerous exarchs now scattered across Azeroth and Outland. The Triumvirate of the Hand of the Hand of Argus may be some form of replacement, for it to at least some extent, having enough authority to decide that the Exodar should return to Outland, unless the prophet ordered otherwise.[5]
On the Azuremyst Isles, Exarch Admetius acts as the leader of Blood Watch,[104] while Exarch Menelaous leads Azure Watch.
High Priestess Ishanah[105] and Farseer Nobundo[106] represent draenei interests in Alliance political matters whenever Prophet Velen is unavailable.
