Council of Dornogal is the first Major Faction of The War Within. They are the ruling council of the earthen of Khaz Algar.

History

Foundation Hall, the capitol of Dornogal.

The Titans uplifted four wards to uphold the Edicts and oversee the construction of the Coreway and its fortress, Dornogal. The wards consisted of High Speaker Eirich, leader of the Machine Speakers; Stormward Baelgrim, leader of the Stormriders; Stoneward Adelgonn, leader of the Stonebound; and Councilward Merrix, who led the Council.[1]

As time went on, the Stonebound began to seek more from life and abandoned their edicts, becoming the Unbound. Adelgonn supported their decision, who likewise abandoned her charge as Stoneward. Baelgrim was furious with them and revoked the protection of his Stormriders.[2] After the Awakening Machine broke, Eirich retreated to the Ringing Deeps to repair it, leaving the Council. He eventually exiled Speaker Brinthe to the surface under the pretense of representing him on the Council.[3][4]

Millennia later, Dalaran crashed on the Isle of Dorn after being destroyed by Xal'atath. Baelgrim went to investigate the crash site and left Stormguard Gorren in charge of the Stormperch. At the crash site, he helped the survivors thwart the nerubians attacking them, but ordered them to leave. However, he changed his mind when he mistook Magni Bronzebeard for a thraegar. They soon realized the attack on Dalaran had been a ruse and that Dornogal was under attack as well. [5] Baelgrim then led the defense of Dornogal with the aid of the outlanders and managed to drive the nerubians from the city, but not before they destroyed the Coreway.[6] Merrix thanked the outlanders for their assistance in repelling the attack and welcomed them to Dornogal as his guests.[7]

The four thrones of the Council of Dornogal filled during N [70-73] Convergence.

Needing the aid of the Unbound to repair the Coreway, Merrix ordered Baelgrim parley with Adelgonn at Freywold Village. Baelgrim begrudgingly agreed and met with her. Despite an initial tense reunion,[8] Baelgrim managed to reconcile with Adelgonn, with some help from Moira Thaurissan and adventurers.[9] Adelgonn resumed her duties as Stoneward and her Unbound returned to Dornogal,[10] while Baelgrim pledged his protection once more. Merrix and Brinthe welcomed Adelgonn back to the Council and together they decided they needed to repair the Coreway before they could bring back the Machine Speakers.[11]

With the Unbound repairing the Coreway,[12] Baelgrim set off to the Stormperch to rally the Stormriders to form a perimeter around the city. There, he discovered that Stormguard Gorren had betrayed the order and made a deal with Xal'atath for power, corrupting many of the Stormriders into skardyn and unleashing void monstrosities within the rookery. With the help of adventurers, Baelgrim was able to defeat Gorren, his followers, and the creatures they unleashed, but nearly the entire Stormrider order was wiped out by Gorren's betrayal.[13]

With the Stormriders decimated, it became imperative to divert the nerubians away from the city. Baelgrim planned to draw them to Cinderbrew Meadery and ignite the cinderbrew to cause an explosion that would wipe them out.[14] Adelgonn managed to convince Wenbrandt of their plan with the promise of rebuilding the Meadery after. However, their plan did not go as expected, and Baelgrim was forced to sacrifice himself to trigger the explosion, killing the nerubians troops gathered.[15]

Merrix, the leader of the council.

Merrix declared that they would honor Baelgrim's memory by having the earthen stand together once again, and that they would support the outlanders in their endeavor to stop Xal'atath, no matter what the Edicts said.[16] He then sent Speaker Brinthe, alongside the outlanders, to the Ringing Deeps to bring back the Machine Speakers. When they arrived at the Ringing Deeps, they saw the work sites were in disarray and besieged by kobolds.[17] With his attention solely focused on the Awakening Machine, the High Speaker had neglected his other responsibilities. They tried to ask Eirich for his aid, but he refused to listen to them, however, he allowed them to wander the Ringing Deeps. Still in need of the Machine Speakers, they decided to address the issues the High Speaker had ignored in order to gain their support directly.[3]

With discontent growing, Eirich addressed his subjects in Gundargaz. He dismissed concerns about the nerubians and the worker shortage and assured them that he was investigating the disappearances in Taelloch, but dissuaded people from traveling there.[18] Dagran was suspicious about Taelloch and went to investigate with Magni and an adventurer.[19] There, they discovered the workers transformed into skardyn and that Eirich had made a deal with Xa'atath. She granted him the power to restart the Awakening Machine, but it would awaken the earthen as skardyn instead.[20] They warned Brinthe of the High Speaker's plan and gathered a force to stop him.[21] They wrested control of the Earthenworks from Eirich's followers and confronted him in the Hall of Awakening.[22] Eirich was able to corrupt the machine and escaped through a portal, but Magni channeled Azeroth's power and cleansed it, allowing earthen to awaken for the first time in millennia.[23] In the aftermath of Eirich's betrayal, the Machine Speakers elected Brinthe as the new High Speaker.[24] Deposed, Eirich fled to the Stonevault and barricaded himself alongside his remaining loyalists. Dagran and a group of adventurers eventually found him transformed into a skardyn and ended the former High Speaker.[25]

When the Alliance and Horde fleets arrived in Khaz Algar, Merrix welcomed the factions into the city and had the Dornogal Steward set up their embassies.[26] In order to support the war effort, many earthen began training with the Horde and Alliance, however, they still needed the Stormriders. They were able to bring back the Stormrooks thanks to Rooktender Lufsela and formed a new Stormrider order.[27]

A short time later, the earthen held a ceremony at the Proscenium to officially join the Alliance and the Horde in their war against the Harbinger. To do so meant renouncing the Edicts, and thus Merrix proclaimed that all the earthen of Khaz Algar were from that moment Unbound. Adelgonn then struck the titan console upon which the Edicts were written with her hammer, as a symbolic gesture of their newfound freedom. However, the destruction of the console activated a failsafe protocol and caused a Colossal Titan Construct to rise from the sea.[28] The construct made its way to the Isle of Dorn to punish the earthen for abandoning the Edicts, so Merrix sent the newly appointed Stormriders to stop it. After the battle, Merrix asked Olbarig if he would take the mantle of Stormward. Olbarig instead proposed that Rooktender Lufsela was worthier of the title; thus, she became the new Stormward.[29] High Speaker Brinthe wanted to contribute to the war effort and restarted an ancient golem facility with the aid of Dagran and ZZ-01-47.[30]

When the nerubians launched an all-out assault against the Arathi, the earthen supported their defense.[31] After the battle, the Council thanked the outlanders for uniting the earthen again and helping them see that tradition can evolve and change.[32]
