“Power isn't da end all of defeating ya enemy, and it most certainly isn't tha end all of stayin' alive. Fightin' is about balance. Everytin has its time and place.”
The Darkspear circle[3] is an organization of Darkspear troll priests practicing the old ways of their tribe and revering the loa who grant them their powers.[4]
History
World of Warcraft
In Year 25 ADP, Ur'kyo was referred to as the greatest of the Darkspear's priests and their spiritual leader in Orgrimmar.[1]
When Forsaken supplicants attempted to find a loa to bargain with, Ur'kyo tasked the priest adventurer to give them a blessing, since the undead weren't too popular with the spirits.[5]
Cataclysm
Following the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, the Darkspear priest trainers sent their apprentices to meet Shadow-Walker Zuru in the Valley of Spirits.[6][7] He tasked them to prevent the influence of the Twilight Hammer over the Dark Iron clan, such as burning the books they distributed to prevent them from recruiting in Blackrock Depths.[8] He also tasked the Horde priests to gather unique materials that could only be found within Shadowfang Keep, as Warchief Garrosh Hellscream had commissioned the master enchanter Godan to create a special weapon for them, in recognition of their dedication to the Horde's cause.[9]
During the war against the Zandalari, Priestess Hu'rala helped the Horde adventurer to mind control Ohgan'aka,[10] using the young raptor to discover Jin'do's plans inside Zul'Gurub.[11]
Mists of Pandaria
After the Attack on Theramore Isle in 30 ADP, Darkspear loa-singers were among the Rok'nah forces who faced the Alliance heroes in the ruined city.[12]
When Warchief Garrosh Hellscream declared martial law on the Darkspear Isle, the Kor'kron forces shackled the Novice Darkspear Priests, who were later freed by the Darkspear Rebellion.[13] During the Siege of Orgrimmar, several priests were seen healing the Injured Darkspear Combatants outside of the capital.[14]
Warlords of Draenor
During the war in Draenor in 31 ADP, a few Darkspear priests could be met and recruited as followers at the Frostwall garrison.[15]
Legion
During the Battle for Broken Shore in 32 ADP, Darkspear Witch Doctors were among the Horde forces following Vol'jin on the battlefield, fighting the demons and healing their allies.[16] After being freed from their Legion captors, the Sen'jin Battle-Healers supported the Horde adventurers during the Legion Invasions across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.
When the third invasion of the Burning Legion began, Darkspear hexpriest answered Alonsus Faol's call to unite all the priesthoods of Azeroth, and later joined the ranks of the Conclave under its new High Priest.[17] They later fought demons on the Broken Shore as members of the Armies of Legionfall. They were also present to defend the temple from the nathrezim Balnazzar and his demonic army.[18]
Battle for Azeroth
On Exile's Reach, the ghost of Sha'zul taught young priests the holy spell of Resurrection, in order to save the souls of the Horde castaways from being consumed by the necromantic magic of Gor'groth.[19][20]
Shadowlands
In Year 35 ADP, the Darkspear priest trainers began sending their apprentices to meet Martin Goodchilde of the Conclave in the priest section of the Barracks.[21][22]
Dragonflight
In Year 40 ADP, when the Darkspears conducted the Trial of the Loa, Witch Doctor Tzadah betrayed her tribe and summoned Mueh'zala.[23] She and her undead army then took over the Darkspear Training Grounds, scattering and cursing its trainees, including the priest trainees. The Darkspear hero later thwarted Tzadah's evil magical circles[24] to free the trainees.[25]
Culture
“Respect our ways, or a curse be on you and yours.”
- — Troll priest trainer's gossip
Like the other troll tribes, the Darkspear priests revere the loa as divinities, who grant them powers over the Light[26] and the Shadow.[27] Once they are ready, their received their Juju Hex Robes from their masters, and call themselves brothers/sisters.[28] Their members include priests, voodoo priests, witch doctors, and high priests as the higher rank.
While their orc allies may not approve of all the Darkspear traditions, their old ways die hard, and they still continue to practice some of them in secret.[29] Although the Horde has given our people a safe home, they always remember that it is the loa who are always watching over them. Sometimes, the great spirits send visions to their devotees, who can meditate at sacred sites to clear their thoughts and contemplate on the loa's wisdom.[30]
The more they practice their arts, the better is their control over the spirits, and the more they are allowed to accomplish great things. Only the spirits can decide if a troll priest can teach their disciple greater abilities.[31] They believe that power is not simply just to defeat one's enemy, much less to survive, but that fighting is a matter of balance.[2]
