The Arathi Navy[1][2] (or Air Navy)[3] is a branch of the Arathi Empire's military. It is divided into a number of fleets, with its Third Fleet being part of the Hallowfall Expedition.
History
More than a decade before the war in Khaz Algar,[4] the emperor of the Arathi Empire assigned the Third Fleet to the Hallowfall Expedition, placing it under the command of General Vaelisia Steelstrike.[5][6] The fleet traveled past "Titan's Isle" and across the Storming Sea, braving its impassable tempests. The armada was nearly destroyed in a final storm but was suddenly enveloped in Holy Light from the Emperor's Vision. In a flash, the light transported the entire fleet to Hallowfall, deep in Khaz Algar beneath the surface of Azeroth. The Arathi fought to regain control of the airships, and many died as the Third Fleet crashed into the cliffs of the cavern.[7][5][8][9] One the ships that was lost was The Soundness led by Sky-Captain Roed.[10] With no way to contact home,[8] the surviving Arathi settled in Hallowfall under the light of the giant crystal (or "star") they named Beledar,[7][5][8] which they interpreted as the fulfillment of the prophesied star.[11] The land in the cavern proved fertile, allowing them to build the holy city of Mereldar and a new society.[5] In south-central Hallowfall, the Arathi built Tenir's Ascent, their main airship dock. Nearby, the Lightspark Sky Academy was founded, under the supervision of Headmaster Fynch, in order to train Arathi wishing to join the airship crews.[12]
During the Day of Darkness, Sky-Captain Velhan of the Indomitable, who was out on patrol looking for any signs of encroaching threats, ordered a return to Mereldar to defend it from potential threats. However, without Beledar's light, the airship crashed. Rather than continuing the journey, Velhan ordered the crew to stay and await rescue, but they were soon attacked by the Kobyss. Many crew members perished, but when they finally returned to Mereldar, Velhan's report was very different from what had happened. After retiring from service, Velhan gathered a group of like-minded Arathi who wanted to live a safer life outside of Mereldar. Together, they returned to the Indomitable's crash site[13] and established a settlement, which they named Velhan's Claim.[14]
The War Within
During the war in Khaz Algar, Livia's Patience was attacked by Sureki forces from Azj-Kahet. The Arathi brought out The Reckoning in response. Great Kyron and General Steelstrike sent adventurers to evacuate the townsfolk[15] and hold back the nerubians while the Reckoning prepared to launch a bombardment on the town. The crew then brought the ship over to the balcony of the Patient Lake Inn, allowing adventurers, Anduin Wrynn, Alleria Windrunner, and Faerin Lothar to climb aboard.[16] Anduin noticed the nerubians aiming a Void-empowered ballista shot at the ship and leaped off the balcony to stop them, destroying the ballista at the last second. The Reckoning took off and circled above the town, bombarding the Sureki with ballista strikes, Faerin's Sacred Flame, and Alleria's Void abilities, until the latter two decided to steer the ship down through the Whispering Chasm into Azj-Kahet to rescue Anduin, inadvertently delivering the ship into a nerubian trap. The Kaheti fired ballista webs at the Reckoning, trapping it in place[17] above the Ruptured Lake, where it then remained stuck.
Some time later, the Arathi completed construction of their flagship, The Dawnbreaker. A new warship designed with the firepower to turn the tide in the war against Azj-Kahet. However, on its christening day, the Order of Night attacked the ceremony. The new leader of the Order, Speaker Shadowcrown had forged an alliance with Azj-Kahet and masterminded an audacious plan to steal the flagship. Heroic outsiders, whose appearance General Steelstrike had requested to witness this historic launch, managed to stop the Order of Night and the Sureki from capturing The Darnbreaker and destroying Mereldar.[18]
When a goblin salvage team discovered an isle with a strange "singing crystal" at its center, the Arathi, like the goblins and earthen, took a keen interest in this crystal, Lorandel, as they named it which turned out to be similar to Beledar. Thus, they organized a joint expedition to Siren Isle where Lorandel was located.[19] The captain of the The Dauntless, Elaena Lancekat volunteered to serve as captain of The Starchaser, a new airship the Arathi built for this expedition.[20]
Fleets
Third Fleet
The Third Fleet is part of the Hallowfall Expedition and is under the command of General Steelstrike. It is composed of several airships, each led by a Sky-Captain. The expedition's original airships were not fit for underground flight; newer aircrafts have innovations that fix that issue.[21]
